Allin preflop, staring at hole cards. Allin preflop, staring at hole cards.

On the weekend I played a tournament where a middle aged lady shoved all in preflop and then stared at her hole cards while I made my decision whether to call her or not.

I am thinking this should mean weakness but then I thought maybe she is trying to convey weakness and make me call.

Any advice appreciated.

It depends on your read on her, do you think she would try to play you like that? Usually a player starring at his cards/showing it to players beside means he has a weak/drawing hand, probably suited-connectors, maybe a small pair.

But..
1. She could be playing you
2. She could be staring at her Aces because it's so rare we get these aha.

Do you mean she had the cards flat on the table and was staring at the back of them?

If so I wouldn't read anything into that other than trying to remain stoic and look into a "neutral" spot.

If she had them raised, and was looking at the fronts- well that's just plain weird and something I have never seen before. So no idea!

She was looking at the fronts! Had them raised! Bending them. Yeah that's what I thought, weird, but I've seen it twice now but I haven't seen what they have either time.

Generally it will mean weakness, as players with very strong hands don't like to look/stare at their cards. But I'd prefer to have seen a player do it before and have a good feel for them before I'd act on it. Either that or feel it was a very borderline spot that could go either way.

I have found that with women you need to look at their hands. Clasped or 'busy' hands tend to be weaker than hands that are on the rail on top of each other.

As others have said, you really need a baseline behavior to better judge the situation but I would've seen this as slightly uncomfortable. But you can't rule out the fact that she just didn't want to be eliminated and may be anxious over that thought.

Depending on stack size, any PF shove by middle aged woman is JJ+/AK/AQ at worst but can be down to KJs/88 if the stack is short enough. Game time decision based on previous data ... sorry ... GL

It has been my experience that an Old Lady shoving all-in is usually very strong.

Sounds to me like wired Broadways. She couldn't remember if she had boys or girls.

Thanks for everyones replies. I think this is what made it difficult. I'd only just sat down at the table and she was quite a big stack compared to the rest of us. Maybe 30bbs while the rest were <20 and I was around 15bbs from memory.

The difficulty was the conflicting messages: One was that she wouldn't be staring at AA/KK/QQ/AK like that but the other was that middle aged ladies only go allin with premium holdings. I think I had 88 from memory and folded.

I have people hold up aces or kings and let me see them as a neighbor all the time. I try not looking because I dont wanna give off a tell that hurts them.
