I agree with an earlier poster that you should try to squeeze a Bulls chip in there somewhere, but it creates a chip color problem.

You have something like:

You end up with a Blackhawks and Bulls chip that are too similar to differentiate. If you use black as the dominant color with the Bulls, you run into a differentiation problem b/w Bulls and Bears. You have to go with the dark blue/black Bears chip otherwise you run into the same "two chips with dominant red color" problem b/w Bears and Blackhawks.

I suppose you could do a Bears chip that used orange as the primary color (the Bears have worn that as an alt jersey), but that doesn't resonate as strongly to me as the traditional dark blue. Still, if you did orange Bears, then you could do black Bulls and keep the red/pink Blackhawks.

I know from my conversation with Brett that he was not going to make every chip a team and was thinking about a black hundo with the Sears/Willis tower on it.

Since I'm in legal-nit mode at the moment, it seems: is Brett planning on using team logos on the chips, as it seems from this thread?

Any risks of copyright infringement, if anyone would waste their time prosecuting it?

Chip idea looks cool, but that would be my only (very minor) concern.

My only comment so far- the orange and red chips might bleed into each other too much, if in play on the same table.

Don't think so from my understanding. Also, the chip makers would address that issue if there was one because they would be on the hook.

Sorry for not responding to my own thread in two weeks, I've been playing army for about twelve days straight. I'll respond fully when I have more time.

bump/update

Called ASM just now but nobody answered. I left a message.

I'm looking to start working with a designer this week hopefully. I want the sears tower on the chip inlay in some sort of capacity. Inspiration from the Cleopatra chips on the ASM site:

Where the cleopatra head would be the sears tower. Hopefully they get back to me soon, I'm really excited to get this process kicked off.

Also, I was talking with my best friend who is designing the set with me. We thought that a hundo chip revolving around my time at west point would be cool. Here's what we've got:

Trying to emulate something like the army A:

B, I'm also doing a Chicago themed set, and would just suggest that there are lots of Chicago symbols consistent with black. The Army chip seems out of place with your theme. E.g., a stylized representation of the Sears Tower. Double white edge spots for the antennae.

I like the hundo look a lot. Maybe you should switch gears and do an army themed set.

Talk to J5 on chiptalk for design work. Reasonable price and is outstanding to work with. I can email you contact info if you would like.

Also maybe different inlays for each chip? Would cost more but would be super sick. What mold are you thinking about?

Yeah, I kinda felt the west point thing stuck out too. I think the $25 is good but two army things is a little weighted. I love the idea of the sears tower thing. Here's a couple mockups:

edit... got me thinking some more. Everytime I fly home to Chicago from NY at night, I am absolutely mezmorized by this sight:

My heart slows down and I smile on the inside. I remove myself from the zoo that is my school and realize that I'm back home, where I grew up and have always lived. I would absolutely love to emulate this in a chip. Here's a couple mock-ups:

Took a screenshot rather than uploading each individual chip. Kinda hard to get the right color yellow/red/orangeish but idk, maybe I can find something good. You guys let me know which ones you like. I'm not settled yet but I like the second and the eighth, the eighth because the dayglow yellow makes the chip pop (which, arguably, that's what a hundo should be doing).

Definitely. Send me his e-mail if you wouldn't mind. I wasn't sure if ASM would handle design or if I'd do it with someone else. Wasn't able to get in contact with them today after calling twice.

My buddy and I are toying with the idea of different inlays. I guess the hinging factor is whether or not ASM will print them if they had team logos on them. If they wouldn't, then maybe each inlay could have a drawing of the stadium/field that particular team plays at. I'm thinking I want a modern, sleek-ish style for the inlays. Like maybe a picture/drawing of just the stadium with modern typeface. Idk just throwing things out.

Finally, as far as chip breakdown is concerned, here's what we've got so far:

5c x100
25c x400
$1 x300
$5 x 140
$25 x 40
$100 x 20

This gives me a good breakdown to play 25c/50c - 50c/1. That's what we usually play with my college friends at home. However, it's also enough that I can jump up to a 1/2 game if I wanted to. The above is something like ~$4000 in the bank, and a full table of ten buying in for $100 each would leave 3/4 of the bank behind.

The plan is to have the chips at my house the day I drive back from west point after graduating (26 May, 251 days but who's counting ) and then run an all day, 10-handed 1/2 mixed game. I'll be getting in touch with jz once the time comes to make this happen, I've got some ideas that I'll bounce back and forth with him next semester.

I played a few times in a cash game wher the host had gotten a set of ASMs where the inlays were different photos he had taken of the neighbourhood he lived in. The $0.50 was a shot down a stairwell to the door of the first home he lived in, another was a street scene from Chinatown, etc. Was a very personal, and really cool set. I would ditch the military aspect of your "Chicago" set, as the military is more a "national" type of theme, than a "local" one.

Just my opinion, and worth what it cost.

Definitely like that theme. The intent behind the whole set, and the army stuff, is that this is a chipset I will take with me wherever the army may take me. I get really nostalgic when I'm away from home. I guess what I'm saying is that the chipset is not necessarily an all-Chicago thing; it's more of the things that remind me of home + stuff I like. Bottom line I'm not bothered that the army stuff like the $25 is necessarily 'out of line' with the rest of the set.

update... I'm in contact with J5, looks like we'll be working together. Cannot wait to start getting some designs bounced back and forth. Also, I cross-posted the thread over at CT with all the relevant chip/design posts made in this thread. We'll see what people say over there.

update - here's the most recent revision from over at CT with the help of some really awesome comments/chip-gurus over there:

Ditched the nickel, everything is in denom order, 25c/1/5/25/100. Thoughts? The 25 represents the St. Patty's uniforms that the Cubs, Sox, Bulls, and Hawks all have.

Doesn't fit well with all the other chicago-themed chips. However, the plan is to use this chip, along with the camo green one, in an Army-themed tourney set in the future. It'd be something like camo green for the 25, west point for the hundo, and then a different army branch for each of the remaining denoms. In example, Quartermaster (logistics) is maroon, that'd be the 500; Signal Corps (communications) is orange, that'd be the 1k; the rest could be whatevs. Probably Infantry, which is baby blue, for the 5k, just because everything is in support of combat arms.

...like this quick mock-up...

Purple is like that because it looks good, orange is in a cross-flag orientation because that's what the signal corps branch insignia looks like. The blue has just the spot at the top because infantry soldiers wear a blue cord from their right shoulder. I think it's simple and perfect.
