In my home games with buddies we play dealer's choice and often have wild cards. I have always played that five of a kind beats all straight flushes including wild royals but a couple times people have said they have played where a wild royal beats five of a kind.

Is it standard one way or the other?

1) 5 of a kind
2) Natural Royal Flush
3) Wild Royal Flush

When I play with wild cards, the new top rank is five of a kind. Then royal flush on down as usual. A "natural" hand gets no preference over a hand with wild cards (unless we're playing natural 77 wins the pot).

In my youth, we played games with a lot of wild cards. How many? How about five card draw (one draw) with all the red cards wild. 26 wild cards in the deck. Five of a kind was the top hand, but we broke ties by who had the fewest wild cards. Three folks might have five aces, but one of them actually had two natural aces for the winner.

Game with wild cards can cause disputes. The host needs to have very clear rules about how the wild cards work and what the hand rankings are.

I had a drunken game of "deuces, jacks, and the man with the axe" (seven card stud with 2s, Js, and K wild) turn into bedlam one night when a royal flush and five of a kind got to the end together. Somehow we'd never fully addressed this, and the person who yelled the loudest ended up getting her way; the royal won. (It was $0.10/$0.20 fixed limit, so the pot was worth about a bag of potato chips anyway.)

We settled on five of a kind being the top hand at a later time, but yeah, it can create messes to not deal with it upfront.

Trying to give wild card hands and natural hands different ranks is a recipe for chaos. You'll soon have debates about the number of wildcards.

Whatever hand you can make with or without wild cards, should all rank the same.

And yes, five of a kind is the best hand.

If 5 of a kind plays, it's the top hand.

Wild vs Natural makes no difference.

I have played in games where 5 of a kind was treated the same as 4 of a kind (losing to a straight flush). It was fine, as long as everyone knew (and remembered).
