Also, to solve the problem of the players who can attend EVERY tournament having an advantage over those who cant, I like to use a "bye" type rule. Under this rule, players can miss a few tournaments (say 10-15% of the total events in a season) and still be credited points for those events based on their average points for all other tournies they've played in that season. This way, the busier guys still have a fighting chance vs. the guys who have the time to make each and every event.

Turning my every other week game into a league was a great decision for me. Attendance is consistent and right were I want it to be with regulars and newcomers. Our point system, which I am sure would be bashed by most, works perfect for us. Our league website has added a ton to our fun and has eliminated the hassle of me hounding people with "are you playing this week?" emails. Moving to a league format has really raised the stakes for our low stakes game.
