Re: RFID Table - It Begins!

I, uh, showed the boss how to play Hex Defense on the Streak, where I took the photos I'll update shortly. I took photos of the cards, weighed them, etc.

Re: RFID Table - It Begins!

Cards, thoughts and preliminary photos of the RFID equipment/cards...

The cards are poker size. You can see in the last photo that the deck of RFID cards with one joker weigh 130g. In the first photo you can see that I've added a bridge-size deck of Cartamundi cards to the scale as well, and together they're 250g. Once you consider the poker/bridge differences, they're the same weight as the other cards.

I received a blue deck and a red deck. Thank jebus I didn't get two red decks, although having individual replacements would be nice - considering the cost of the decks. I suppose deck #3 can be repaired with cannibalized cards from deck one or two for a while if necessary. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

The deck is roughly 1/8th of an inch thicker than its counterpart. I still don't own a digital caliper, so I can't throw those sort of pictures up. I should have some professional dealer opinions on them Thursday, so I'll not elaborate too much.

In the photo above, you see 16 antennas, the control board from and center, cables, both decks of cards, and a Cartamundi deck from my own stock -- as well as some of the clutter in my living room. The boards are all custom-made for his company, from an Asian your-design-to-our-board company. These aren't off-the-shelf, although the antennas are fairly straightforward.

All of the wood was delivered today. I'm going to switch to the good camera and grab shots tonight. I should be able to stain the racetrack, as that's the a dependency on the timeline.

My artist is still working on my felt, so beta-testing the table will happen on Volara foam.

Re: RFID Table - It Begins!

Here's more detail on the cards:

Reference Copag "Poker" Size Deck
125.78g
0.66" Thick
2.47"x3.47"

Cartamundi RFID Deck
130.42g
0.75" Thick
2.36"x3.40"

Cartamundi Standard "Bridge" Size Deck
121.42g
0.63 Thick
2.27"x3.51"

Cartamundi Paper Deck - Casino Canceled
90.55g
0.60" Thick
2.47"x3.56"

----

RFID deck is 14% thicker and 4% heavier than what you're probably playing with now.

----

Things I now own because of this forum include:

Re: RFID Table - It Begins!

Interested in how the cards go during play, and with players bending back the cards to check their hand, does this effect the cards in any way?

Hopefully at 10x the cost of normal decks, they won't be hurt too much more than normal plastic playing cards would.

-----

I've glued the outer rail and I'm staining the racetrack.

My artist (through Big Slik) might have a mockup for me tonight, but the felt is obviously WAY critical path. I should have a working table with temporary felt by late this weekend, perhaps. Depends on how many problems I run into during the next few steps.

I won't get much farther than glue and stain tonight. I've only got room for those two operations in the garage, and they need to set before I move on to varnish/poly and free up the space to work on the legs and then the electronics assembly.

I also haven't "built" one of the computers yet, but the hardware is sitting there.

My Wednesday league is tomorrow, and I've got to be in the office all day tomorrow, so I won't get too much done until Thursday - at best. It's possible I plug in the power by this weekend if I'm lucky.

Photos of tonight's work soon.

Unpack, Glue, Stain, Varnish

And the mock-up of the table felt came back from the designer for Big Slik.

See y'all tomorrow-ish.

Really like the felt. Your chips will look great on it.

Basic question, though: will your players mind everyone seeing what they have on every hand? I would. Maybe I take it all too seriously.

There's no plan to use the RFID system every hand of every game.

Re: RFID Table - It Begins!

Looking good!!! I love seeing tables being constructed. There is something satisfying about it. It would be really cool to own a table like that, but I would probably just record everything and never do the editing to make it worth it. I like your plan of not using it all the time either. I imagine most people, like eneely and myself, don't want people seeing how they play every hand especially when you play with them consistently.

Yeah, but enough to give up a lot of info, I would imagine. Unless folks don't care. Or even better, they want to run some sort of RFID level. Fold AK in the cutoff, and raise 85o UTG. Just to **** with everyone.

I think you over-estimate the amount of time the RFID system will be capturing data, or the amount of time that the RFID cards will be in play.

OK, fair enough. I figured with the amount of effort and money you are putting into this, you might use it some.
