What are some fun prop bets to play with friends at home games?

Flop colors: $5 for example

I pick red, you pick black.
We each pick one "special card" IE: I pick 6h you pick 6c

If the flop has 2 red cards I win $5. If the flop has 3 red cards I win $10
The special card is worth $5 on the outside and $10 on the inside. So if the flop is all red with the 6h in the middle, I win $20.

We do a 4 player version of red/black, but with suits. So each player claims a suit. The whole flop has to be red or black to collect, unless you're playing with a 4 color deck. If 2 of your suit is on said red or black flop, all other players pay you 1 BB. If the flop is paired, or if the flop is 3 connected straight cards, or if all 3 of the cards on the flop are your suit, all other players pay you 2 BB. If the entire runout is your suit, all other players pay you an additional 2 BB.

Optional rainbow flop rule: The suit left out of a rainbow flop pays all other players 1 SB.

We play the rainbow game too, but you can claim the rainbow. Turn has to complete the rainbow and pays double.

I've had great fun playing Lodden Thinks, where two players bet on what they think a third player's answer to a numeric questions will be (e.g. What is the total population of South Africa?). It doesn't matter what the actual answer is, only what the third player thinks it is.

The main down side to Lodden Thinks is that it often distracts players from the main game, and the poker slows to a crawl. Still, it's tons of fun and highly recommended at a casual/friendly game.

We used to pick a specific card for 2 - 4 players.

For me it was K

I got paid on a flop with
1 SB for 2 of my suit or rank (2 non-king clubs, 2 non-club Kings)
2 SB for all 3 my suit or rank (3 non-king clubs, 3 non-club Kings)

Bonus SB if my exact card flops, making a 3 SB payout the most per flop, and even allowing a 1 SB for just my exact card (and not an additional club or King to go with it).

Slowing the game down is the worst. Not everyone can handle multiple thoughts at the same time, and players not involved really hated the slowdown from some players.

We paid out on the flop, and I'd like to think that I never slowed the game down, playing in turn, then taking care of the prop bets. I know that other players in the hand would settle up props, then move on to playing their hand and that was wrong.

Still others saw chips being tossed to other players, weren't really paying attention themselves and thought there was action on the hand.

It's now rare that we play that game

fwiw, i have played all the prop variations and we eventually killed any prop that involved the order of the flopped cards (ie. inside outside) because all of our home games are self-dealt and everyone has a different style of laying out the cards. it got tedious to listen to players argue about the order of the flop and that their 6 of hearts should have been in the middle, etc.

Also, it is very important to keep the props money separate from the game chips. It wasn't uncommon in a $50NL game to have someone lose $10 on the flop in props, throw 2 reds to the prop winner and then jam the flop with a short stack. a mess. It also tilted everyone that the fishiest players at the game always play props and lose their buy-ins to the prop game versus the poker game.

For us, the best way to keep track of prop money was to have a single denom chip from a different chip set stacked next to our game chips. That way you buy-in for the props separately and you can freely throw your props chips back and forth during the game without f*cking up the game.

We keep a clipboard with a spreadsheet and mark who wins what so we can settle up after the game or sometimes we do it on the hour. That way no chips are bring tossed back and forth every hand. We used to do that (toss chips every hand) and the non prop players got very angry one evening.

If you ever have to pick a rank of card to appear, choose the 2. It appears more often than the other ranks.

If you think I'm wrong, I can prove it. But think about it first and you will understand why.

This is not a troll. If you want to take the Ace I'll take the two and we can use your holdem manager to show the proof. Its mathematically correct. The reason is this;

More flops are seen when players hold premium cards. If you were to plot a graph of cards seen on boards, the graph would be a perfect line from the 2 to the ace. There was lots of research on this over at pokerai.org where I saw the graph. I'm not talking huge differences, but over the long term, betting on the two would be a far better bet.

If you still think i am troll, I will put my money where my mouth is and bet $1000 against you. We can use any legitimate source of holdem boards that you like. 20,000 boards. Happy to escrow. If you decline, retract your troll comment.
