poker chips - what do the colors mean?

I believe these chip colors are universal around the world.
For instance local poker club here in Croatia had following chips
1 - White
5 - Red
10 - Blue
25 - Green
100 - Black
500 - Purple
1000 - Yellow
5000 - Brown
