I understand that the normal "rank" of poker chips is as follows:

White
Red
Blue
Green
Black
Purple

I know there's more, but I'll stop there. What dollar amounts are normally associated with each color?

green 25
black 100
purple 500
yellow 1k
past that i think it starts to vary from casino to casino.

Beyond that they usually vary. I've seen 1,000 in either orange or yellow. 5,000's either pink or grey, and some 10k and 25k chips pink or grey.

Those were all tournament chips though. To my understanding, cash chips are all one color everywhere in the US.

crown casino, Melbourne once had a blue chip.. which was a $10 value, so that fits in with the rankings OP mentioned.. alothough it was dark blue. $1000 chips are light blue also

Blue is usually 10.

Remember, just because you have 7 colors, doesn't mean you have to USE 7 colors. It's faster and easier and more efficient to use 3 for primary use, and maybe 1 more for a really big chip (ie, represents a full buyin).

i once played in a home game and the hosts had this setup:
25c chips
50c chips
$1 chips
$2 chips
$5 chips
$10 chips

such a joke.. i laughed. we played 25c/50c blinds.. and when we questioned them why the 50c chips, they said 'coz the blinds r 25/50'..
and we said we didnt need 50c.. and they asked 'then how do we do a big blind'... LOL

IMO you should ask them to add $3.50 chips because you like to bet about tree fiddy a lot of the time and a $2 chip is too small and a $5 chip is too big.

Some people just like to have a lot of chips in play. Surely you can be more effective but it's a bit lame to make fun of them imo...

You will sometimes find blues used for $1 chips. Reds, greens and blacks are the most standard. Pink is often used for .25, though that is not a standard color.

I know I've seen pink chips at some of the casinos in AC that I regular. I'm pretty sure they were 2.50 there. Obv mainly found at blackjack tables.

10's aren't a common chip, except in poker rooms. It is used as the color of signs in casinos - to denote a $10 table though. Especially now that the signs are electronic, generally it has some LED lights and an LCD display. They change the LCD to $5 and the LED to red; then at night when the casino is busy, the LCD goes to $10 and the LED switches to blue.

Blue is most likely the second most common color for white chips. I've got piles of casino chips, and while white is the overwhelming choice for $1 chips -- but blue is a close second. Binions are blue, off the top of my head, but many other casinos use it too.

Yellows and pinks and blues get used quite commonly for other low dollar chips, $2's, $3's, $2.50 chips on blackjack tables even...

Your white $1's are the next most used, followed by pink-ish $500 chips, I'd say.

they also use the occasional quarter and half dollar coins for paying commissions at pai gow.

I believe chip colors in AC are dictated by NJ regulations. I don't think that's the case many other places. I know CA has a lot of "non-standard" chip colors at different card rooms.

I did not know that. I've spend very little time in any casinos outside of AC.

In AC the pink 2.50 was used back in the day of the PCG (pink chip game) infamously at the Tropicana and a year or so ago was attempted to be revived at the Borgata. It was 7.50/15 LHE with a 2/3 chip blind structure.

It was played ONLY with pink chips and the number of them in play caused an obscene amount of action.

I've heard people talk about the pink chip game, but never really knew what they were talking about. I can see how that game could lead to crazy amounts of action.

3 chip 6 chip limit with a 2/3 blind structure is the nuts. 1/2 makes pots too small; 4/8 makes player's stack so big they need a 2nd color chip. 3/6 is just perfect.

You want to hear a ****ing joke? A friend runs home tournaments once in a while. He uses dice chips. I said I'd bring my chips over and set everything up. Had everything figured out, blind levels, starting stacks, appropriate colours, everything to run a smooth tourney that would last just long enough.

But no, 4000 in chips wasn't "enough" chips for a tournament. Also, 3 colours aren't enough, gotta get at least 5 different colours on the table. Also, **** tournament clocks, we'll double the blinds whenever someone busts or whenever we feel like it. Also, 25/100/500 for chip values?

ive always seen blue chips as dollars, most casinos ive been to use white for dolalr chips, but ive been to 2 that use blues. Never seen a $10 chip

I know people on here get in a tizzy about the extra chips and colors, but it's a home game, and not worth getting all upset about. They like the big 100-unit red stacks. I just stack-em to the side and don't touch them until an all-in comes up. Then if I lose the hand, I get the satisfaction of shoving a 100 chip stack at them and watching their attention for the next three hands wane due to their having to stack back up all those ridiculous colors.
