Here is a new, minimalist card design: http://design-milk.com/iota-playing-...by-joe-doucet/

Interesting from an artistic perspective, but I don't think I'd ever actually play with these. Between the very small indices and the lack of pips/court pictures, there's way too much potential for confusion.

If they were made with jumbo indices, they might be playable. Otherwise, like Schmendrick said, they are basically like my Blancos . . . a conversation piece.

the backs are worse. almost featureless white, but with a fine diagonal slash because "it's necessary to mark the backs of regulation poker cards".

The design on the back adds visual noise that helps mask subtle smudges or other marks that naturally accrue on a card. Those "overly ornamental" graphics are as much function as ornament.

I'm not much of a traditionalist in most ways, but I've yet to see a playing card design that is a real improvement over the standard cards for the last century or two.

I don't see a way to buy the Iota cards. Are they just a designer's novelty and not for sale?

"The deck will be available as a limited edition along with seven other products at Doucet’s Play exhibition in the Wanted Design NYC pop-up store from May 17th-20th."

Update: I received two A of spades today in the mail. Unfortunately neither was the correct card. Both were platinum acetate, but one was regular index, the other was regular index 4 pip. It even had Jumbo written on the sticky note attached to the cards. I called again in hopes to get the correct card...

Wow, that's pretty ridiculous. I really like Modiano, too, so I'm hoping this is just bad luck on your part and not typical of their customer service.

Cool! I like the unique monochromatic court card designs, yet they still look very playable thanks to the standard indices.

I think this is concept art rather than a product, though. I couldn't find a way to purchase these cards.

Yes it is just a design at this point. My daughter is pursuing a graduate degree in industrial design and she shares these links with me.

I like this card and chip set from a local designer. Kinda funny because of all the mustache fever that the hipster kids in my city have.

This guy seems to be pretty successful with playing card Kickstarters. We need to get him in touch with Jason.

Hey there, I'm that guy

In addition to running a handful of upcoming kickstarter projects of my own, my brother and I are also doing consulting for other projects. Drop me a PM if you have questions.

Thanks,
David

how long did it take you to shoot that video?

(gorgeous cards, by the way. I've never seen a 4-color deck that I liked, except yours).

do you ever make plastic cards?

The video shoot was one day...there was a lot of prep time figuring out the script and then plenty of time doing the editing and graphics.

Did you see the video for the Polaris decks? (These are also very nice 4-color decks):

We've looked into plastic cards but they are insanely expensive to get custom printed by KEM. I've been considering finding an alternate manufacturer but haven't had time to get anything figured out yet.

These cards on Kickstarter are so goddamn nice. Even with the horrible shipping costs to the UK, I really want to get a deck or two. Or maybe an uncut sheet to frame.

They would go well with Nevada Jack poker chips.

Not long ago, someone either here or on CT turned me on to some slightly-used KEM arrows on Amazon. I'd never owned the cards before and the price was good, so I picked up a red and blue setup. They arrived in opened but very good shape, looking practically new.

I used them for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and about an hour into the game, a card from the red deck chipped. I'm not sure how it happened; my guys aren't rough on cards, and I've never had a plastic card chip like this before. It had about a 1/2" split down the middle of one side. I replaced the deck and played the rest of the night, having no issues with the other KEM deck.

After this game, I left the cards sitting flat on a table in my air-conditioned mancave. I returned to clean things up a couple days later, and the red deck with the cracked card had warped. Severely. The cards weren't all bowed in the same direction; they had bent individually and weren't sitting remotely flat anymore.

The blue deck seemed okay, but I was so frustrated that I just tossed the whole setup (and failed to take pictures before doing so). My guess is that there was a storage issue with these used cards, and they were probably compromised before I even got them, but it left a bad taste in my mouth and I probably won't be purchasing KEMs again.

Anybody else ever have a similar experience?

The Red/Blue Arrow KEM's were one of the first "nice" setups I ever bought. To this day I think they had the best feel of any brand and that includes Copag, Fournier, Dal Negro, and the like. But it didn't take more than a month of moderate use (one or two games per week) for them to warp. The red deck warped uniformly to where the center of the card bore the weight of the deck while the corners bent upward. The blue deck didn't have that problem and lived on much longer.

I think it's interesting and worth noting that you had the same experience with the Red Arrow KEM's. Between the two, I'd much rather have the Blue deck in good shape and pitch the red one, but it just doesn't feel right using a non-matching set of cards when you have 2 decks in rotation.

The Party Poker plastic cards (I think they're Fournier) were my second favorite cards in terms of feel. They lasted much longer, but unfortunately the Queen of Clubs got a crease in it and it shows very clearly in the dark green background. You can see it from across the table, so that deck had to go as well

Kems did have a bad reputation for the year or two after USPC took them over. Could have been some old stock that you got your hands on. Bowing with Kems is a known issue. I try to be pretty careful about storing all plastic cards in a case with jokers on the top and bottom.

A lot of plastics are susceptible to physical changes when airborn solvents get to them. Depending on what they were stored next to, that could easily make them brittle. Humidity can have an affect on the warping, it seems.

My younger daughter game me this deck for Father's Day. They are paper, and are offered by a NYC historic hotel, which is used for performances.

They have aces and pips designed from the stuffed birds and bats at the hotel. Here are the aces:

The pips have an unusual order, as well. I also like the face cards:

Notice the "13" card. I wondered, why not 11? Or 14? But the site says the hotel celebrates the number 13, so that card was included.
