Need New Chip Set Advice

I have had my 1000 chip dice chip set for almost 10 years now. Got it back at the boom when I was in high school. I now think it is time to move out of that stage and get a better set for my game.

We play both tournaments and cash games. We just recently started the cash games and are trying to figure out what works best. Its a 10c/25c game with 100bb max buy in

I would like the same set to be used for both cash and tourney. I know this can cause problems so I would like a set that has alot of different denominations that we can use for the two. I am looking at something between $200-$350 dollars for 1000k chips.

I am liking the bluff canyon set but it doesn't have the 5c chip I would want for our cash game. Game would consist of anywhere between 6-15 people. We like a good length tourney 5 hrs or so.

Here is the bluff canyon set http://www.pokersupplies24hrs.com/PO...-AND-SETS.html

I would like the cash game set to have 5c, 25c and $1 chips. This allows for games from 5c/10c too 10c/25c with 100bb max buy in. But once rebuys occur or more people show up periodically I forsee a $5 chip being needed here as well.

Tourneys could start from $25/$50 and go on up from there. What do you guys think would be a good set for something like this?

I believe the china clay Pharoah chips have a 5 cent denom. You can check em out online at Apache poker chips

Just dbl checked Apache, they do have a 5 cent denom chip and it looks like a 1000 chip set costs $355. Just about your budget limit. Don't forget to include shipping costs and always GET SAMPLES!!

Re: Need New Chip Set Advice

I have a sample set of the Dunes Commemoratives and they're supposedly very similar to the Desert Palms. For my tastes they are still too "plastic" feeling. Regardless of others opinions you should get samples of lots of different chips, play with them for a while and then decide what YOU like based on your budget and criteria.

If you like the Bluff Canyons, I would try the Milano chips. Same manufacturer, higher quality, and more "casino like" if that matters to you. No 5 cent chip but a great value for the price point.

Good luck in your search!

Re: Need New Chip Set Advice

Desert Palms are similar quality to the Pharaohs (if you buy from Apache, beware of cheaper options which are selling cheaper plastic models of the same chip). Get samples of both IMO and pick the one you like.

To keep the 2 sets separate use 5c, 25c, $1 and $5 for cash and $25 and up for the tourneys. Thing is to support 2 tables for both cash & tourneys while not using the same chips in both (i.e. $25 can't be used as a high denom for cash)

Cash set:
200 5c
200 25c
300 $1
100 $5

Total bank is $860 which is just over 3400bb.

Tourney set:
Since we are using $25 and up and you want a deep stacked tourney lets say a T10000 starting stacks

8 x T25
8 x T100
6 X T500
6 x T1000

For 15 players you need something like

140 x T25
160 x T100
120 x T500
120 x T1000
60 x T5000

We just got to 1400 chips total.

If you are willing to share the $25 chip with cash you can decrease this. Another option is to use the $25 chip as 25c in the cash game.

Re: Need New Chip Set Advice

When I purchased my Venerati's, there was no $.05 chip available. I solved this problem (well, eneely solved this problem for me) by going from a $.10/.25 game to $.25/.25, with no noticable effect on the game.

Make sure you check out this thread on mid-range chips; it may help you make a more informed selection. And get samples!!!

Edit: and post pics!

I will second that. I run a 1/1 game instead of 0.50/1.00 for the same reason. But OP indicated he wants the ability to run 0.05/0.10 as well in which case he needs nickels. If it's possible to keep the cash games at the higher blind level only I agree 0.25/0.25 is better, and you just bought yourself alot more chip options (i.e. you can go above 1000 chips with a cheaper chip vs. the pharaohs/desert palms)

I have a set of 600 Desert Palms, and I am really happy with them for our Cash Game. I have a set of 1200 Chipco Egyptians (including Plaques) for the tourneys though.

Re: Need New Chip Set Advice

Do you play cash and tourney on the same night? If not, then you can use your micro-csh set to play tourney and not have to buy as many chips.

And I find the Pharaohs the nicest of the China clays. They all feel very similar and stack nicely, but I find the Desert Palms sticker to be a little cheesy. The Pharaohs have the largest size denom font and I really like the edge spot progression.

Not the best idea. This topic has been covered frequently, and the general consenus is to have seperate chipsets (or at the least, seperate chips from the same set) for cash and tourneys. Keeping seperate sets eliminates the possibility of unscroupulous players palming low-value tourney chips (say, a few T5 chips) and cashing them in at a later time or date for $5 each.

Re: Need New Chip Set Advice

My $0.02 . . . Played with the Desert Palms, but bought the Pharoah's. I know a LOT of players who are very happy with the Pharoah's chips. Currently thinking of adding some nickel chips to my 1,000 pc. cash set of Pharoah's. I think 2 racks would be just the thing to allow me to go from a $0.05/$0.10 game all the way up to a $1/$2 night.

With the easy availability of most of these chips that can happen regardless. The only way to avoid this is with customs.

It's difficult to palm several $5 chips when you are playing T10 tourney.

Note that I mentioned "micro" cash set. The OP is talking $0.05, $0.25, and $1 chips, so either $5 wouldn't even be in tourney or would be the highest chip and in extremely low quantity. The workhorse chip would be the $0.25. At best the unscrupulous player would palm a few nickels or quarters.

I really think this is a good idea for people that want decent chips, play both cash and tourney (not on the same night of course) and don't want to spend a lot.

Re: Need New Chip Set Advice

Thank you for all the advice in this thread. To answer some questions. When I said two tables, I really meant that as an expanding thing. Now we average around 9 players. We usually start with a tourney and as people get knocked out they go play pool for a while and wait until enough people get knocked out to start a cash game.

I also want the 5/10 game and the 10/25 game because all of us are either the broke ass college kid type or the freshly into the workforce type. So the game played on that night depends on which category shows up.

every once in a while a tourney might be as large as 16 or so but most of those haven't ever played cash game poker and don't stick around to do so once they leave. So the current situation is not two tables of cash and two tables of tourney.

I am going to order a sample set of both the palms and pharoahs soon. Are there any other sets that anyone might suggest in the same price range.

I have also thought about a 500-600 chip set for cash. Most likely the palms and something else for the tourney set. This way the cash set might not need to be so big because I could have 10 or so $25 chips for the cash set and use when rebuys get deep and there is alot of money on the table.
