Given initial description of villain, I like CRAI on the turn.
Sounds like he has a wide range preflop and on the flop and is liable to bet a lot of floats if we check. I also think he can have alot of hands like pair + gutshot that end up calling our shove as well as all the worse 2 pair combos.

I agree that Hero missed out on a big chunk of value on this hand. The turn was especially weak.

I like the check-raise plan for the turn. I think villain is almost always going to "bite" if checked to.
