Re: June 2012 Open Thread

Rant ahead:

This revolves around banking procedures (again). Quick background: due to problems in the past the group adopted a unique procedure. Everyone buys in for 300bb, and starts pplaying with however much they want (typiclally 100bb) with the rest going into the players pockets. The bank isn't touched all night. Rebuys are done from the chips in the pockets, if someone runs out he buys from someone else, transaction is between them without touching the bank. The bank has 2400bb at the start of the evening at that's it.

Personally I never adopted this. When I host I take responsibility for the bank and haven't been short a dime ever.

So we each shell out the 300bb in cash, we started 6 handed, then the last guy comes in half an hour late, the host counts the cash in the cup and what do ya know it's short 300bb. Nobody was "in charge" of the cash, we each check our wallets and everyone is short the money they paid at the start. I have zero suspicion somebody stole the money. This was likely mishandling of the cash, there was some dealing with collections at the start related to a sports betting pool (the European soccer championship) not related to the poker, that may have been the source but who the f knows.

Long story short the issue was resolved by us instgating a hefty rake of 10% capped at 10bb for the evening until the 300bb was covered. But the whole thing left me pissed. I lead by example, other hosts seem itimidated to take responsibility though. I have resolved for next time to resist buyin in for 300bb. I will buy in only for 100bb and only just before we start when I verify visually the money is ok (if I share the responsibility I have a right to make sure).

Thanks for listening.

Any chance YOU could be responsible for the bank at this game in the future? IMO, it would be a bit weird for someone other than the host to be the banker, but it would be a heck of a lot easier...

Re: June 2012 Open Thread

I am not willing to do so since when I don't host there is a chance I will bust out early in which case I can no longer be in charge. And in any case I don't like taking sole responsibility for this job which has all the risk and no reward.

No reward? How about eliminating this?

I understand your point, but the new method isn't cost-free, obviously. The question might be how to hand off the bank (everyone counts?) but if the cost of the pocket-pool system is high enough...

Re: June 2012 Open Thread

Hey, don't get me wrong. For 10% rake capped at 10bb I'm willing to handle the bank and deal all evening as a bonus . We raked in the 300bb in just over 2 hours, this is a HUGE rake for a home game.

When I take ownership of the bank, I assume full responsibility (something this forum taught me). I am accountable for any shortage. I do so when I host because it's important to me that the games I host are assigned a certain level of security I can commit to and have my "stamp of quality" so to speak. I expect others to follow suit but not all do. I can't force it, I don't have enough appealing options available to just drop this game for poor banking procedures, so I will be looking to minimize my exposure. I hope when others follow my lead for similar reasons we may end in everyone else seeing my POV.

Re: June 2012 Open Thread

Oh, forgot to add my results in this "raked game"

Picked up AK like 4 times, whiffed every F-in time (multi-way each time and on crap boards LDO)

Managed to 3-bet shove KK after a raise and 3 callers when I was ~ 60bb, called by AK, Ace on the flop

Raise 77, 2 callers. Flop comes 764 with 2 diamonds. C-bet, both call.
Turn comes 8 (is there a worse card I could hope for?) and guy in MP leads. I look at my stack, the guy covers me, I know he isn't folding if the board pairs and I can get stacks in (one of the big donaters to the game) and I'm getting good enough odds assuming stacks go in on the river to chase my FH. Guy behind me tanks for a while and calls too. River is some blank, the guy shoves, I fold and so does the guy behind me showing 88! Cooler averted I guess.

But I did have QQ hold up towards the end though I didn't get paid off much.

So down 190bb this session and the result is likely steeper due to the rake, though given my tight play vs. the table norm I was probably among the smaller contributors to it.

Quick Question for Y'all.

There has been much discussion about seating for our End-of-Season Freerolls and/or Tournament of Champions. I would like to use the snake method for seating for the 16 eligible players (1-4-5-8-9-12-13-16 and 2-3-6-7-10-11-14-15).

Should I use the Final Rank in Standings or the Freeroll Chipstacks to seat players?

I would go with chipstacks to so there is an even distribution on all tables, but that's just me and i know nothing about tournaments.

+1 on chipstacks. I think leveling the total # of chips at each table is pretty important here.

Agreed. In the same vein as a heads up tourney where chip stacks are combined or a shoot out where the same thing happens. You want balance or you may end up with some disgruntled players.

Re: June 2012 Open Thread

Here we go. We are set for tonight. 14 of the 16 eligible players have been assigned seats. 2 can't make it and called ahead.

The tables are somewhat balanced. Top 3 earn $300 towards a tourney this summer. Regular season winners (badhabit and I) earned $400 towards a tourney. Badhabit played in the $600 Mega Stacks at Foxwoods with no success. I will most likely be playing the $550 at Mohegan Sun's Summer Showdown.

TR to come.

Re: June 2012 Open Thread

We had a late backout (Chris), which left us at 13 players vying for three sets of $300 towards a tournament this summer. It was a strange evening.

There was the quick, and the not so quick. In the 2nd level (I think), Pogoman and Napkins got it all in on the turn. Napkins had a made hand and Pogoman had the nut flush draw (AKc) plus overs. Pogoman spikes his flush on the river sending Napkins to the cash game. A few minutes later, our super shortstack who filled Napkins' seat busted out, too.

Within the first 4 levels, we were down to 8 players. Not many details, considering I wasn't involved with the tournament that much in the early stages. Wesrwood got knocked out and things slowed down considerably.

After a while, I wandered over when there were 5 players left. They played 5-handed for about 45 minutes. It wasn't the typical satellite "passive, I don't want to bust, limp-fold, limp-call" type of play. It was the shove and double type of play. Once Joe A busted out in 5th, 77 < QJ & TJ on a KJ9xx board, I dealt the rest of the way.

The final 4 were Troy (8th in chips to start), Al (4th in chips to start), Mike (9th in chips to start), and Luke (2nd in chips to start the night).

Just like it was before, there were a few shoves-folds and a few shove-doubles. The last hand of the night spelled doom for Troy. As Al, Mike, and Luke ended up being the 3 freeroll winners. No details on the hand, since I'm exhausted and don't remember.

They guys are awesome. The 3 winners threw Troy some cash as he bubbled. Good stuff. Great season. Guys are excited about next season.
