It does at our games. Sometimes someone who is closest to the muck will gather it, square it and then pass it over to the one who's supposed to be shuffling who couldn't reach. They'll sometimes forget to start shuffling and the deck sits there. When the hand is over, if the cut card isn't on top we know it needs a shuffle. This doesn't happen all the time as it's usually shuffled right away as it should be.

Without the 2nd cut card, a deck that's sitting there squared up is in question as to whether or not it was shuffled. Usually the one who was supposed to shuffle will remember, then again after a few drinks....

BZZT! This may be true if your game has a dedicated dealer, but again, my guys always square up the deck before shuffling, and I don't think I've ever seen anyone put the deck down in v-formation if they have to act on their hand in the middle of a shuffle. I know I've never done it.

The next logical step is a potty training toilet, for your players who aren't yet using pull-ups.

Dual cut cards are for housewives and little girls.
MeeeOW! Kitteh has claws!

And as a host who has had to clean the bathroom numerous times after a night of poker, I cannot deny that some of my guys could use a training toilet.

Not voting because the correct answer isn't up there: For a self-dealt game, you need one cut card for every deck in play. For a dedicated dealer dame, you need only one cut card per table even if you use two decks per table.

So, for a self-dealt game, one table, one deck means one cut card.
One table, two decks means two cut cards.
Two tables, four decks (2/table) mean four cut cards.
Three tables, six decks (2/table) means six cut cards.
etc, etc, etc. ... ad nauseam.

Well, it was fun making a mountain out of a molehill.

I haven't heard many good reasons to clutter up the table with another cut card. They are cheap, or we do it because that is the way we do it is not compelling.

If someone cannot tell or remember if they shuffled the deck, how can we be sure he didn't put the cut card on an unshuffled deck? As an indicator, it seems pretty ineffective if you cannot rely on the shuffler that much.

But I guess I can embrace diversity.

I guess.

Putting the cut card on top of the deck, while not 100% foolproof, is usually a conscious act done when the shuffle is finished. I suppose a player could also point at you with his middle finger without actually meaning to flip you off, but it's unlikely.

We really have made a mountain out of a molehill, but that's what we do around here. Also, I reneged on my promise not to participate in the poll and chose the only obviously correct answer: I like pie.

one cut card, one button, one dealer.

haven't tried two cut cards lately, maybe I'll add one to the next game and see what chaos ensues.

If your players have a hard time getting the shuffle done or can't remember if they shuffled, maybe you need an indicator. We never have an issue.

And I can respect anyone who votes pie.

Do you have a dedicated dealer? If so, having two cut cards would be unnecessary.

Just asked because you did mention "one dealer." Seriously, though, I did play in a game once with a dedicated dealer, two player-shuffled decks, and believe it or not, two cut cards, one for each deck.

If you need a shuffled deck indicator, but the cut card sometimes gets shuffled into the deck or misplaced in some way, instead of a cut card, you could use a special card protector to indicate a deck is shuffled.

Hosted a game last night and asked my players for their opinions. They were unanimously in favor of two cut cards and couldn't understand why anybody would want to play with just one, or for that matter, why it was even a matter of discussion. Reaction from the player on my left: "That's the most ridiculous thing I every heard." A little hyperbolic, perhaps, but he made his point.

People get used to how their SOP. "Most ridiculous?" I think many of our players would say the same thing about adding a cut card.

My players had a similar reaction when I introduced the BB shuffle. I told them I'm not so entrenched in the status quo that I fear making positive change. That shut 'em up.

tl;dr: poker players aren't known for liking what's good for them

Are you sure that's big enough for your drunken, UTG, Alzheimer-suffering shufflers?

I hope so, because some days it feels like those are the only players I can beat. I don't want to chase them off.
