Check your state laws. Accepting money for boat rides without the proper license might be illegal. You might be running an underground boat charter. Most people say that won't float, though..(yuck, yuck)

Only later, after selling that money-hole and begging rides on other friends' boats, did the thought strike me that the guests could at least pay for lunch.

point is, the boat probably cost $hundreds per trip and as owners, we were happy enough to absorb that expense to entertain our friends and ourselves.
Yeah, I'm stupid like that, too. I own a boat.

But you can cost share anything, and it is cool as long as all agree. I have been fishing with a dentist a few times on his $200K+ sport fishing boat. His guests pay all immediate costs: diesel, bait, ice, meals, etc. We stay at his house on Hatteras. A good deal all around, and it cuts down his costs a lot, but I'm sure maintaining that boat costs a small fortune. And he bought the beast, of course.

if your friends don't even know how to play, why the hell are you forcing them to play in your rakedeathtrap?

for the record, you don't rake friends. you aren't their bitch and they aren't your baby daddy. if you want to start a venue, then do it. but don't steal money from your friends and call it standard operating procedure, asswipe

oh, and who needs proper side pots? not this game.

can a high hand qualify as a low hand assuming no other low, nor the nut low comes into play? man, wish I had someone who knew the answer at this table

you're a trip man lmao get a life. i'm implying I know the rules of the game. go be a jackass in some other thread.

Re: home poker nights and their problems

cash games should not be 6dollar max for those stakes should be more like max of 4. 10% 5 dollar cap for 1/2 cash. at my local home game tourney night its 50dollars +5 for house now one complains just present it in an honest format if its a 30dollar buy in and your take 3 bucks out of that say the buy in is 30+3 so 33 total. I wouldn't say its 30 then just take 3 out makes it seem more shady even though you are doing nothing wrong plus keeps the buy in a nice even number for calculations when prize pool comes around.

Bring your own snacks and drinks, no rake, enjoy the night.

I would never pay a rake to play in a home game.

I would however chip a few coins in a donations box if the host provided the drinks and snacks.

Sour subject, so ill use here to vent. The Biggest problem is filling a full table! As host, I wish it was easier to get 10 quick confirmations.

Re: home poker nights and their problems

You need more players. Play in other games, recruit. Ask your friends if they have friends who are interested in playing.

Something that helps is consistency. If you have a game every Thursday night at 7pm no matter what, then people start to plan for it. If there "might" be a game, and they won't know 'til Thursday afternoon, then they're more likely to make other plans. If they know two months ahead of time that there will be the regular Thursday game, then they start to schedule around it.

Find a core. Get five of your friends who really commit to keep this game running regularly. That way even if one of them can't make it, there are still four of your friends plus you at the game. Five-handed is not a bad game, but that way whenever the next person shows up, you're at 6-handed, which is very reasonable for a home game.

See what I mean? If you have your core, then the casual player who shows up will ALWAYS have a full game, will ALWAYS know there's a game to play. Your attendance will grow from there.

I can second much of what pfap said, especially this. While it wasn't the only factor in the decline, my numbers started dropping when my planning schedule became non-bi-monthly.
