When they asked, did you say, "Damned starboard, you can!"

At the time, it never ever occurred to us to ask for a contribution from the passengers for anything other than a split of the grocery bill on the way to the marina. Half the time, we didn't even collect that.

Check your state laws. Accepting money for boat rides without the proper license might be illegal. You might be running an underground boat charter. Most people say that won't float, though..(yuck, yuck)

Only later, after selling that money-hole and begging rides on other friends' boats, did the thought strike me that the guests could at least pay for lunch.
point is, the boat probably cost $hundreds per trip and as owners, we were happy enough to absorb that expense to entertain our friends and ourselves.

Yeah, I'm stupid like that, too. I own a boat.
But you can cost share anything, and it is cool as long as all agree. I have been fishing with a dentist a few times on his $200K+ sport fishing boat. His guests pay all immediate costs: diesel, bait, ice, meals, etc. We stay at his house on Hatteras. A good deal all around, and it cuts down his costs a lot, but I'm sure maintaining that boat costs a small fortune. And he bought the beast, of course.
