February 2012 Open Thread
Happy February!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a strange question. As I prepare to make dinner for myself and kids, I had frozen chicken drumsticks that I thawed in the fridge. Should I worry about the chicken going bad? Does the freezing process stop the clock on chicken's age? I want the chicken, but I don't want to risk my kids' lives for it. Please help (FAST)!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: February 2012 Open Thread
you have twins - use one as a control, the other as the experimental...
How long have the drumsticks been thawed for? If less than 36 hours, should be fine. Cook thoroughly, ldo.

About 20 hours of thawing. I pulled the package out of the freezer last night with the intent on making it tonight. Who do you think I should give the chicken: Lucas or Tessa?
Does it matter how long they've been frozen? A week? A month? A year? A decade?

Re: February 2012 Open Thread
Im not foolish enough to answer that one! I hear mothers can be pretty mean if you get their babies hurt...
USDA says 9 months frozen for chicken parts. They say 1-2 days in the fridge to thaw is fine, i say go for it.

Re: February 2012 Open Thread
I was really hoping to eat these tonight. I think they're about 14 months old. I'm thinking about it.

Re: February 2012 Open Thread
I wouldn't worry about it spoiling from being thawed too long. I would worry that it's been in the freezer too long and will taste like ****. I've cooked and eaten chicken that been in the fridge fresh for 4 days. It should be fine if it went in frozen 20 hours ago. Of course, I do have a stomach of iron...
If you're that worried about it just go get some more. Or hit up KFC

Re: February 2012 Open Thread
I'll give it a go. Worst case scenario is that I cook it up, it doesn't look right, we don't eat it, and I make the kids hot dogs or something like that. It's not ideal, but it has tremendous upside.

Re: February 2012 Open Thread
Here's what I decided. I threw the chicken on the the grill; the grill ran out of propane. So, I'm baking it the rest of the way.
I made the kids the tri-color spiral pasta and the wife gets a personal boboli pizza. I'll attack the chicken when it's ready.
Thanks all.

Re: February 2012 Open Thread
I always hate when the grill runs out of propane. Extends the time to make something but, the plus is I always get more since nobody else in my family waits. So maybe the grill didnt' run out and just wanted the chicken for himself..... I would never do that.

Pro tip: have a second tank on hand for a quick swap.
