Ethics Question
I am playing live 2-5, underground NY club, last night and theres 6 limpers. I am SB with 2,4 clubs and flop comes out 2 2 3 with two hearts. donk bets 30 in cutoff, i smooth call. turn comes a black jack. i lead out 60, donk shoves 205(allin). I tank for 30 seconds, say " I don't think i can fold, i call, Good Hand". river comes out a 5 of hearts and donk asks, do you have a two, i said yes with no kicker though. Donk goes crazy berating me and knocking my chips over calling me names and stuff.
Am I in the wrong at any point in the hand with my statements or play?
- i could understand if i said good hand after the river and when the guy is forced to show his hand but to say good hand before the river, i aboslutely thoughta 4 kicker was no good there, that thinking being reinforced on the heart river.

Re: Ethics Question
Yeah, I'd say your "good hand" was a bit douche baggy. It implies you are on a big draw or something, and don't have a made hand. Trips are trips, and even though your kicker is weak, it's still trips. And since no draws hit on the turn, there aren't a lot of hands he could have that you are behind.
Of course, none of that justifies the BS the guy did after the hand.
I'd suggest never say "good hand" until you see an opponents hand, the river is done, and he wins.

Re: Ethics Question
i hate when players say 'good hand' or 'well played' and show me a winner
meta-game to get donk on tilt?
(not recommended in NYC underground games)

Re: Ethics Question
I play real tight, i call his shove over the top of my big bet. I didn't think good hand on the turn, way before the river is out was a bad thing. how can you think you are good, smooth call then a big bet and call of an all in raise. what can he think i have? LOL
thanks for responses!

Re: Ethics Question
I understand where you are coming from saying "good hand" when you call. You are acknowledging that you think you may very well be beat and that he put you to the test nicely when you had trips. Still as a consolation prize when he loses it amounts to a burn.
Now I've had players explode on me for this very reason and I try not to say "nice hand" anymore at any point when I have won a hand or could win a hand. But its still likely that >95% of villain's anger stems from actually losing the hand and not what you said.
Extra sucks that its in an underground club...

I totally see where you are coming from and that you meant this in a friendly, well mannered way. However to casual players who donate night in and night out, this seems like you are being sarcastic and critical of their play.
If you have to say anything, try saying good hand or nice hand but add I got really lucky or I was lucky which seems to soothe them.

If it's so obvious what you had and he had to have you beat, why did you call ? Sounds like an easy fold for you then...

Re: Ethics Question
+1 to "Dude lost a pot and is angrily lashing out"
+1 to raking the chips quietly
I don't comment much when I stay in a pot. If I'm folding, I may toss out "good bet". If I am bluffing and should show first, I may go with "Good call".

Re: Ethics Question
The point is that OP gave his opponent the false impression that he was calling without a deuce.
Maybe bad Etiquette. Ethics has nothing to do with it.

Re: Ethics Question
I like the irony of OP referring to villain as a donk.
This thread is confusing. The guy berated you and knocked over your chips after he won? Or did OP win? The dude obviously shouldn't be doing that, but don't be "that guy" who says nice hand as you call a bet.

As stated, it's very douchey to give your opponent the impression you don't have a 2. It's a verbal slowroll.
Now, if it went like this:

Those wouldn't be douchey as you state you have trips. Any form of slowrolling is douchey whether it's verbal or not.

Re: Ethics Question
If you have to say anything, say you have kicker problems as you call. Atleast the guy will assume you have a two. Most times the best thing to say is nothing at all.

Yes, yes, a hundred times, yes. Just call and flip your cards.

Re: Ethics Question
Unless the delivery was nasty, I'm in the OP's camp on this one. Villain seems much more at fault here than OP, if hand went down exactly as described.
