Re: do you select who you invite to your home game

First thought is how long have you been playing these home games? A couple of months, a year, we would need a ball park time frame. The only reason I mention this is sometimes players go on a hot streak for a few months.

I would keep inviting back a good player, as long as they were socialable and helped the game run smooth and they were regular players

As long as you are not an ass hole, confident players like you would be welcome at our game as well, but we may be too low stakes for your tastes lol! Still I love to go up against quality comps'. You certainly might have my ass but it will be a fun tussel getting there! Good luck sir.

with this group, most of them have not played with me other than 2 times... but one guy from this group has played with me a lot over the years and knows my track record and he has told others i guess...

anyways, thanks for all the great responses, it helped me understand other mindsets... this is funny, but when i first got invited, i was wondering if people somehow thought i was a rich fish or something... but i now don't think that, it's probably because i'm ok socially and am willing to play all the time...

it's funny, anytime i meet someone new, they always said, ooh, i've heard about you, you're super aggressive... in reality, i'm no where near that, but compared to how passive these guys are, they may think that...

thank you! just like everyone else, i have a lot to learn but it's confidence boosting when you do well against the same group consistently... the real difference was my online play, it just added so much experience compared to these live players...

Re: do you select who you invite to your home game

If you are 'that guy' who is winning most of the time, part of your job is to make yourself welcome. I am not talking about soft playing, but doing things to help make the game good. Sometimes that might be staying late to help clean up, sometimes it's bringing a case of drinks or a platter of snacks, sometimes it's a new set up, sometimes its a good joke. Use your imagination. It is not so hard to be a 'good guy to have around'.

Most of the folks playing are there to have fun. If you become part of why the game is fun, then no one will care if you tend to win more than you lose.

I was going to say this. These kinds of decisions are ALWAYS based on compatibility reasons and very little else. I play in several home games and there is a pool of roughly 100-150 players in the area. There are people at almost every skill level. One guy who played in our group regularly (until he moved) was an online tournament pro. He was a lot of fun to play with.

The true noobs get an education very quickly - pay attention, play in turn, this is how we handle this situation, etc. and we follow casino rules as closely as possible so there is no culture shock if someone wants to try a local 1/2 game. If people don't want to take it seriously or "can't" pay attention then they get a lot of flak and don't last very long.

I would not consider kicking anyone out because they are too good. If someone is a better player then you better step up your game.

Re: do you select who you invite to your home game

Lots and lots of good answers here in this thread. Some that are missing are:
1. My significant other invited you and she has (can have) a different (like not just from a different planet, but from a different set of dimensions...) mindset than I,
2. You may not be the engaging, socially-adept person we really want in our game, but we really thought your wife would fit in with the crowd,
3. We are aware that you run in a home game circle into which we would like to get a reciprocal invitation.

For the most part we play low enough stakes that any game-crusher is going to be coming for the fellowship rather than profit. Folks get invited based on how they fit in with our crowd, and neither of the hosts have much to worry about in terms of having the bottom line overly affected (my wife having less to be concerned about than I). If you're recognized as playing at a high skill level, then we are both interested in watching your play a bit more up close and personal.

We are always keeping our eyes out for recruitment (though we tend to select players from the local card rooms more so than other home games) as its been intelligently stated here in Home Poker many times that this is the key to a healthy home game (it's also why I'm very okay with my answer #1, up above). Above all fitting-in-with-our-crowd is the true key to getting in the door. Beyond that, we can adjust.

We enjoy winning; but we love playing poker.
Plus, much like B&Ms, you need a dependable core of players to keep the games going. Casual players become ex-players when games aren't available.

In many cases, frequency of play leads to better play, through osmosis if nothing else.

There are at least half a dozen players who (used) to be regular (bastitches!) who are better than I am... partially because they also play a lot more than I get to (b&m and other play).

I'll take the -EV if I can have some EV at all... which 2+2's tourney ain't doing for my bank account.
