I've heard a lot of different things, some people say 11.5 and 14 gram chips are basically the same and it doesnt matter and others say 11.5G chips suck. Thoughts?

I was looking at things like these on Ebay and was wondering if they're good chips and if anyone has experience with them....

Ok, I'm going to be a snob. 11.5 suck. 14 suck. Chips are supposed to be in the 9-10 gram range. Good chips are 'ceramic' or 'clay'

That said, plastic metal slugged chips are much cheaper and do the same thing that higher end chips do - they represent money. If you like the chips great.

No experience, but I doubt that a set of chips selling for $25 is "extremely rare!!!" LOL

Basically it all boils down to how much you want to spend... Get something that YOU like and don't worry about what everyone else says. Of course, if you spend more, you can get nicer/better/more customized chips... that is the bottom line.

those chips look similar to ones i've used, the glossy surface makes it VERY hard to stack / shuffle. I recommend more clay / ceramic ones

Whatever you do, don't buy 11.5g chips.

These look really good. 14 Gram clay, molded edge. I bought a small sample of them.

Pretty sure those are not real clay chips. Generally, real clay chips will be 9.5-10 grams. To be 14 grams you need to insert a metal slug into the chip, which is what most 11g's and 14g's have. Also, if they were really clay, the seller would not have them at $50. A 500 chip set of real clay chips costs around $300. I think that was a 900 or so chip set, so it should cost around $600, or there abouts, at the LEAST. Really nice clay chips will cost around $1.10 a chip, so a 500 chip set would be around $530.00 <That's the real money you'll have to spend.

By the way, I paid that much and it is worth it.

Then clay is definitely the way to go. I have a set of 2005 paulson james bond and one set of ASM hot stamped solids. Couldn't be happier with either of them.

If you want something nicer than dice chips without making the price jump to real clay or ceramics, I'd say go with Nexgens. They're still composite slugged chips, but they look good and have a pretty decent non-slick texture to them. I got a set of 1k in racks in a birdcage carrier for $150. If you play low stakes(less than 2-5 nl) they'll do just fine.

I don't have Nexgen, but I have a set-up like this including the birdcage case. I used to play National Poker Tour B&M freeroll, and when the bar where we played quit and we did home games, I bought chips like NPT's because that's what everyone was comfortable with. But be aware that this $150 chips and cage set weight something like 40+ pounds. I bought my chips based on a game rack which was 4wX25, 4rX50, 7bX100, 2gX500, 3bX1000 for 5000, so I bought more blues than anything else.

Mischman, spend some time there. I think it will be well worth your effort and will save you some money, investing in chips that you won't be happy with long-term.

i bought a set off the ebay link like a year ago, they hold up all right, but my complaint would be the amazing case it comes with, as it kinda, well, is cheap and bends in ways a case should not bend. But they were cheap and serve there purpose well.

Seems to me that they have a bit more information.

If you're not looking to spend close to $1/chip maybe faux clays could be something for you. Haven't tried them myself, but they're suppose to feel close to clay for a fraction of the price. Consult chiptalk.net for further information on those if you're interested.

If you're looking for a "mid-range" chip (as they call it), you should consider the Neophyte line from buypokerchips.com. They're injection molded plastic, but have a great feel to them. Far superior to ABS plastic, but a lot cheaper than clay chips.

Don't forget another important consideration and that's the denominations you are going to get.

If you look at the available list for most chips, it goes like this: 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 500, 1000, 5000, etc.

Nobody has convinced me why they need a 10 or a 50 chip.

Now think tournaments. A good tourney is 5/10 starting blinds with 1000-2000 chips. So each person could get:

5 - 15
25 - 13
100 - 6
500 - 0-2

So for a 20 man max tourney (and completing the 1000 chip set for cash games with ones) you are looking at:

5 - 300
25 - 300
100 - 150
500 - 50
1 - 200

So for cash games using the 1, 5, and 25 chips you can handle blinds like 0.01/0.02, 0.05/0.10, 0.10/0.25, 0.25/0.50, 0.50/1, 1/2, 2/5, 5/10, etc.

I'm not saying that's what you should do but that's how you should be thinking and not just accepting whatever denominations they are giving you if you can help it.

As long as you don't get anything dirt cheap or just cheap you should be good. The totally plastic ones are obviously [censored]. Some of the slugged ones just above dice chips are alright, perfectly playable at least. It's worth getting clays if you're going to use them for years though and have the bank to get a nice set.

Basically, you have to buy what you like, but at the same time consider what the other players in you game will like. Personally, I hate chips with preprinted denominations on them.

I purchased a set of Nexgens and I (and the people who play in my game) absolutely love them. They are not clay, but I can't really tell the difference with these. The real selling point for me however, was the fact that I could order as many of each color that I wanted. I play mostly cash games but have a tourney every so often, so I ordered 200 each of white, blue and red and then just a few green and black to facilitate tourney play.

I feel your pain however, I never imagined that buying a set of poker chips could be so stressful or challenging.
