Hi, I am a novice home poker host and an interesting question arose yesterday between my friends and I whilst starting our tournament.

We were having a bit of a laugh and so the hands took a little longer than usual. However the blinds timer that we were using rose the blinds before the dealer who initially began the tournament was able to play as big blind. He argued that this disadvantaged him in the tournament and as a result we decided to raise the blinds when the dealer chip reached him next, as opposed to using a timer.

This contributed to a tournament that took far too long.

What is the appropriate response in this situation, and how do we prevent it?

My initial thought would be to lengthan the time between the blinds risin, but do you have any other suggestions?

If the goal is to just have a laugh, this shouldn't be the type of thing that matters too much. Home tourneys are (at least for new players) total crapshoots. As your gang gets better at dealing and playing faster, this won't be as big a deal.

You can try using 2 decks of cards. One person shuffles one deck while you deal and play with the other. Make sure they have different backs, or else you'll inevitably combine the decks acidentally.

You don't "prevent it". It's just a part of tournaments. Sometimes you have to pay the increased big blind first, sometimes you don't. Sometimes you get to be "on the button" two hands in a row, sometimes someone else does.

Eventually it'll all even out.

If you aren't getting a full orbit in on a level consider making the levels longer. But don't expect it to work out so that every player pays the exact number of blinds per level.

Other option is to play faster

If one of my guys made that argument, I'd point out as 'first dealer' they have inherent advantages. (Most hands with best position and last player to pay blinds)

Back in the day we used to use 'orbits' or 'hands' instead of timers. It takes the pressure off players to act quickly at the end of levels. For a fun, social game, maybe that would be better for you? If you use 'orbits' be aware that as players bust, the levels will go up quicker, unless you compensate for that.

I tried this, but was too hard for us to keep track of as we got father into the night. It could have had something to do with more drinks (of the adult variety) being consumed.
Assuming you are dealing for button, I would just say it's luck of the draw. Or bad luck, however you look at it.
