Re: Am I out of line here? tl;dr.
What you say => What they hear
Ship it => You lose again, sucker
Nice catch => It is wasn't for luck, I'd win every time
Neither remark is very sportsmanlike, which is what you want to aspire to.

When you own the deck, as I do, flopping the joint ain't worth mentioning.

Re: Am I out of line here? tl;dr.
Okay. I have to point something out that's very important that some people near the end of the thread are overlooking.
If you start calling the nuts "the joint", even as a joke, it's going to spread and people are going to start using it and it will become a part of poker vocabulary. Donk bet has become a normal thing. "Hoodflat" is creeping in there.
You have a responsibility to the poker community to not let this happen.
Please.

OP sounds kind of douchey...there are two sides to every story.
And imo, "nice catch" is a douchebag thing to say to someone after a hand.

Re: Am I out of line here? tl;dr.
OP, what is your main motivation for playing this game? Is it just to have fun with your GF and make a few bucks while your at it? If that's the case, then, like a few of the other posters have suggested, cut the strat. discussion, poker lingo, etc... at the table.
If you are an online pro I'm sure you're taking a hit playing this game in terms of $/hour you could be making, so if you're not having fun, just stop going. If you are enjoying yourself, then go out there with your GF, mop up the tables (discretely), talk to these old guys about their interesting life stories (every person over 40 likes to talk about life stories--except the ones that haven't lived of course) and call it a day.

If someone told me "nice catch" I would just reply "nice throw"

I'll occasionally say it in home games as a friendly needle, but only to a player who knows that they got lucky and who I know will take it in the way that I mean it.
Against an unknown or a fish, I avoid it. I try never to say it in a casino, and I've regretted it every time I have. It makes me look bad, and it's usually a tilt indicator, meaning that I'm being results-oriented and letting my opponent's play-bad-and-get-there style bother me.

See, this is the way I view 'nice catch'. Even if someone is mad that I got lucky in a hand and told me that I would think 'lol, oh well' and move on to the next hand. Obv just a POV thing though.

GF wants to go play in this game. Initially it was to see her father/play poker at the same time. He does not frequent the game much anymore, but she feels comfortable around the other players and does not want to find another game. We both have made good friends with another couple there, the people who didn't think I was outta line in OP, so we go to hang out with them.
And yeah, I'm cutting all strat talk out from what I would normally say at the table unless I'm with friends who understand.
