Acrylic Case Vs Aluminum / Milano Size Variance Acrylic Case Vs Aluminum / Milano Size Variance

I find the acrylic case with chip racks to be cumbersome when running tournaments. I'm now thinking an aluminum case would be more convenient. Thoughts?

I'm thinking about ordering 1000 Milano chips. The website says "Due to*nature of Pure Clay, you can expect inconsistencies in chip thickness and height*from roll to roll. And at times only 19 may fit per row in a chip tray." How big of an issue is this size variance?

A) Buy wider chip trays if it is an issue. It might not be, and WILL not be if you go the aluminum route

B) Do NOT go the aluminum route, please. Bird cages are FAR more attractive, and you will quickly adapt to any awkwardness that results after one or two tournies. Things like stashing rebuys in the empty trays after setting out the starting stacks will become second nature. Plus, the ability to put the top on and "seal" the bank adds that little extra smidge of security to your game that savvy will players will notice and appreciate.

I have no experience with Milanos but my China Clay Dunes have the variance you mentioned. I cannot fit more than 19 of the 500s and have not found any chip trays large enough to fit 20.

I have 1000 Milano's in an acrylic case and do not have any problems with fitting 20 chips per row the chip trays. There is some minor variation in thickness but nothing significant.

I have mixed feelings about the case. I like having the chip trays for color ups and it takes less space on the counter, but when I use them for tourney's outside of my place, I transfer them to an aluminum case for transport.

You can always go for the hybrid option of an aluminum case which houses chip racks:

That's what I did.

Where does one get that hybrid case?

Agreed. I'm in if it can hold more than 500 chips (which it appears like that one does).

It holds exactly 5 racks, so 500 chips excactly.

Lookup Claysmith Case on google, you'll find it.

That is unfortunate. I guess I will stick to the standard acrylic case. Just having 500 chips doesn't work in most tournament and cash game scenarios. Thank you for tracking it down for me.

It just needs to be the same thing, but double sided (500 each side). That would be perfect.

Been having a similar concern lately regarding cases/racks, and am actually about to order some Milanos. (albeit for cash in this instance)

Looking at the height of the case vs the height of a rack of chips, I would bet you can gut some of the lower padding to allow 5 more racks on top of the base 5, since the top padding is super soft and will give. The only concern would be the weight and if the case could hold it. I may buy the case and try this myself, and if I do, I will post back. You can buy racks for $1-2 a pop, or accidentally bring some home from the casino.

Or, you could just buy 2 cases.

It can start to get heavy depending on the weight of the chip. I would get a couple of 500-600 chip cases. The link shows a case I purchased, it holds 600 chips.

I was actually looking at that exact style but many of them were discontinued because the hinges were disengaging. I'm assuming this is not the case for yours but it seemed valid enough to the manufacturer to discontinue.

I haven't used it much but they seem fine. There are two handles on the case so even if the hinge opened, the case is staying closed.
