I almost left her out - her character is good by itself, but it's like the overall story saying "and not only are the women going to be great leaders known for their fairness and judgement (how is Sansa/10 year old supposed to have any kind of experience or wisdom in anything?), but guess what - maybe the best fighter in the land will also be... a woman".

So I assume by just picking out Brienne, you kind of agree on the others.

The Mormont girl is a little implausible, but Sansa's maturation is not. She still isn't entirely coherent about it per my comment above, but I do think it's fair to portray her as a cynic/skeptic. She has been through quite a bit, including significant exposure to Cersei/Tyrion/Joffrey/Baelish, all of whom have exposed her to manipulation, cruelty and/or sophistication. She rightly calls out Ned and Robb for the honorable fools that they were.

I don't get all the negativity in this thread? Seemed completely in line with a ton of other season openers (and like 75% of all the episodes in this show), and had a lot of interesting/well acted scenes. Far from a WOAT episode.

I don't accept the "it's just a setup episode, so you can't expect much" line. An hour long TV episode should still be able to stand on its own two legs, and that was quite dull.

I do get a little sick of SJWs analyzing GoT in a postmodern feminist light. I don't think gender politics are a significant theme of the show; indeed, both male and female characters have depth and seriousness.
using "SJW" as a pejorative is a character tell

if you use "SJW" and "liberal" interchangeably, then i would remind you that i'm not the one engaging in any "gender politics" in my GoT critiques

It's more that it was basically on par with the vast majority of the episodes in this series, with plenty of interesting/enjoyable scenes. I enjoyed it as a pretty normally paced GOT episode, recognizing that not all episodes are going to be able to massively advance the plot.

My SJW comment wasn't at all directed at you, rep, but rather reviewers on slate or CNN that pound a silly political drum on all kinds of reviews. And those terms are clearly not synonyms, as I'm pretty sure you know I know.
07-17-2017 , 04:56 PM
i def do not know that, the terms are absolutely used interchangeably in right wing social circles

you act like i dont even live in the south sometimes...:P

ultimately "politics" is something that touches basically every aspect of modern life, for better or worse (depending on who you're talking to). parallels can always be drawn, but i agree with your broader point- i watch GoT because it's an awesome show with a lot of treachery and characters who aren't 100% good/bad, and the deaths are often very gory and personal, which i really like. mainly idgaf about the way GoT relates to modern day murica, but some people do so whatever i guess

most of the women in the show are awesome, so i'm not about to co-sign that dude's dumbass comment

It did the same to me, took me out of the show.

And not just because it was unnecessary and out of place, but also because it's a signal that the writers/producers care more about things that are culturally relevant in our world than they care about the integrity of the show.

why did it matter? Do you think he did a bad job or something? I had no idea it was Ed Sheeran (though I do know who he is) and thought the scene was fine and made sense. Its not like Arya is an anonymous person either. She is famous irl. You kinda need people who are famous irl in tv shows and movies.

What were you guys hoping would happen in the first episode (no spoilers for what will happen) that left you thinking this was a bad episode?

The only parts I took issue with were the closing scene of Danerys landing in Dragonstone took too long to unfold and didn't even have dialogue (the scene needed to happen, but I wish it was shorter) and Sam's scenes of cleaning bedpans and stuff could have been much shorter. Save 5 of the 7 min (guesstimate) spent on those two things and show anything else and it wouldn't really have any issues at all imo.
