ya she was so annoying and unnecessary. like, we already knew tyrion was captain save a ho and they already had a variety of reasons/ways to choose from for tyrion to kill tywin. there was basically no suspense of them ever really being caught while she was alive, just a lot of her whining and being a total spoiled bitch. somebody itt said long ago that she hit the whore lottery and should have just kept her goddamn mouth shut, and they were totally right. just a completely useless character that did nothing for the show

Oh, come on. That arc has a **** ton to do with Tyrion becoming entirely disaffected from his family. I hated the character too, but she is definitely relevant to the story line.

If she had slightly better writing and much better acting her character would have been much better received.

I was about to say "countdown to bad writing comment"

Was Shae terrible in the books too? Her character could have made a lot more sense if we'd known all along that she didn't actually love Tyrion and was just playing a role.

I realise I keep asking about the books. Sorry if that's still not welcome! I should probably just read the bloody things; I tried the audio books a few years ago but I kept losing track of where I was up to and eventually gave up.

I like Shae. I don't think she was "just" playing him. She was a poor girl in a tough world. Love wasn't a luxury she could afford.

Not to politard it up. But everyone being cool with our favourite character choking a woman to death because she left him because reasons is super ****ed.

She didn't just leave him, she gave false testimony to have him killed.

without her he was already like 75% disaffected, they didnt need to write her in to complete the other 25%

i liked the scene where she and bronn and tyrion were playing that drinking game, but that was it. the rest of the time she spent on camera could have easily been better spent elsewhere and i dont see how that's even up for debate

Interesting article on a few different questionable storylines, including shaes

i got the first book on audio for the drive from CO to NV with the gf this year, and that narrator is the goddamn WOAT. has terrible voices for the characters, unintentionally mis-pronounces names constantly and intentionally pronounces petyr baelish as "puh-tire". so tilting

She was a pawn. What was she supposed to do? Defend him and die for it?

Really? Was that after her ex broke into her bedroom?

I didn't mind the narrator, in fact I quite enjoyed him. For me the problem was more that a story of this size requires a lot of back-reading and I kept finding myself wishing I had a hard copy with the corners of a few (dozen) key pages folded over. Skipping the mp3 back and forth isn't quite the same...

No, it wasn't.

It was after he broke into his father's bedroom and was surprised to find her there. They were both surprised to see each other and then she goes for a knife to try to kill him.

She never leaves her bed.

I get it was a struggle. But the way it was set up with the "my lion" stuff and the court betrayal makes this very clearly not self defence. He killed her for being a treacherous whore.

This was never shown or implied.

She leaves him to screw his father, after his father lectures him about bringing her to King's Landing. It's rather more than just a breakup, particularly given Tyrion's background and the whole story about Jaime finding Tyrion a whore way back when, Tyrion falling for her, and Tywin interceding to have her gang-banged and paid.

I didn't love the story line, but I do think it's pertinent to Tyrion's development.

I don't think Varys testimony was false, though I guess in bad faith.

Anyway, Varys saves Tyrion's ass shortly after he escapes, who knows what would have happened otherwise.

Oh. I agree. It's a big part of his development. I actually like the storyline.

I just don't think we should gloss over how super ****ed up it is.

think varys's testimony was calculated to get tyrion over to slavers bay to get on team dany. also have heard a few theories that shae was actually a spy for varys the whole time but idk.

She literally tries to stab him with a knife, her not having time to leave the bed is irrelevant. She was a treacherous whore and that adds a lot to the story, but it's also self defense.

Even if it wasn't self defense however, there is a lot more going on there than "he killed her because she left him"

do you think the introduction of shae and her whole involvement is really the GTO play for tyrion's character development tho, or do you think there were other, better ways they could have gone about it?

re: the bolded, that's just something you've put together on your own, right? because i dont think the show was definitive about that, i remember it being left pretty open-ended about when she actually started banging tywin and to what extent/how long she was spying on tyrion, whether she ever really loved tyrion and if so, why she decided to turn on him.
