Or maybe they're showing that being a "political genius" in a place where you don't speak the language or know the culture is harder than doing it in the place you've lived all your life. Sometimes characters endure challenges and learn lessons.
I think the Essos / Dany storyline has suffered from poor pacing and thin, repetitive character development for a while. And to some extent that's been true this season as well, but adding Tyrion to the mix has actually helped, not hurt.
Also, if Dany comes back and makes a total heel turn (which has been hinted in Daario's remarks on her being a conqueror) by turning on Tyrion, that will be an interesting development, and certainly one that plays against trope. Alternately, she could realize that sometimes you need statesmen like Tyrion and see that, though he failed, she will need him in Westeros. Both interesting possibilities.
