Where to begin? Where to begin?

I've been out of online poker now for probably about a decade. I was mostly a limit cash game player, and I would like to ease back in a little bit playing small stakes no limit tournaments. My ambitions aren't grand. I'm not intending to do a lot of grinding, but I do want get some experience playing tournaments and also do some reading/studying as I go.

Let's say I have $500 that I'm willing to sink into this venture, and that I'd like to play maybe a couple tournaments a week.

1) I have $0 online right now. What sites would you recommend if I'm mostly thinking about tournaments? (I live in Nevada, if that means anything.) Also, are there deposit bonuses? What should I know about them if I'm not intending to play *that* many tournaments?

2) My approach at first will simply to get some general knowledge and gain some experience. The "Anthology of Wisdom" in Small Stakes MTT looks to not have been updated for the last 6 years. I can work my way through those, but I wanted to first check to see if they're still seen as relatively "up to date" or if there are significant differences in the understanding of strategy between then and now.

3) If I were to watch Twitch/YouTube videos to just get more exposure to ideas, who would you recommend?

4) Are there books I should buy? Any software?

5) Other pieces of advice?

Thanks!

Books are old school and the game has evolved significantly since most were written. One good recent book is Jonathan Little's book on bluffing.

Podcasts and videos are great (personally I prefer podcasts). There is so much free stuff out there that you can probably consume >100 hours before having to pay for something. Jonathan Little's hand of the week is a good quickie series and I'm a big fan of the Postflop Poker Podcast for low stakes strategy.

You can also capitalize on free trials of software (most have 30 day trials) and free mobile apps for things like basic equity analysis.

Thanks. I'll definitely look into those.

Any suggestions on where to play? The last time I had any real money online was before the FullTilt scandal. Suffice to say I know very little about the landscape of online poker these days.

You can play on wsop.com (only available to Nevada residents). Also ignition and Americas card room. Those are the big 3 for u.s. Players.
Not sure about their signup bonuses, you'd have to check with the sites but I would expect they all have a similar bonus... 100% sign up bonus up to $xxx.

I've been playing on 888 for a while and I'm pretty happy with it. Decent game selection and weak-passive opponents.

Thanks. I tried reading through the internet poker sticky about US players, and it's like drinking from a firehose, especially since I don't know who is a skin for what. So it helps to get the field narrowed down a bit and to have a nudge in a particular direction.

Sorry, missed the US part. I'm Canadian so 888 might not be open to you.

So we are in the same boat, I mostly grinded the 15/30 Party poker game a between 2003-2006 until neteller bailed on US customers The games were great back then.

After that I was mainly live games until i decided to drop some cash in ACR a few weeks ago to play some MTT's and 25 & 50NL.

Get Poker tracker or Hold'em manager, this is a must for both cash and tourney play. Other than that its just like it was years ago, only with less fish. They player pool is certainly stronger, even at the micro levels

+1

I'm almost amazed at how good the average player is now days. A lot more aggressive and a lot less likely to pay you off, sucks!
