Poker theory: Do you ever flat AA? Poker theory: Do you ever flat AA?

Might be one of those spots where I should just play normal and forget about it.. but where's the fun in that.

I've been experimenting with flatting aces (sometimes kings) it's still a pretty limited sample, results have been average to good (haven't tried to measure ROI). The main reason for flatting is when stack sizes are awkward for shoving.

I developed these criteria for flatting:

16-25bb eff.
MP-LP raise
Hero is not in SB or BB
Hero is first caller

Keep in mind most of what I play is turbos, so stack sizes are small. I don't play with a HUD so it's not stats dependant.

Any comments appreciated

More of a question than an answer so sorry but was there anything in particular that led to you wanting to try this?

Too many other important factors to comment, like the tendencies of the raiser, the stack sizes and tendencies of players behind, etc.

I do occasionally flat AA yeah but agree with darth it's dependent on certain situations.

Quick example. Hero is in BB with 18BB. Button with around 30BB min raises. This particular player raises 1st OTB 8 times out of 10 and folds to a lot of 3 bets. I flat with the plan to c/r all in on most boards (apart from lock down boards such as A94 rainbow). I'd usually do this in a regular speed tourney.

In a turbo, I'd always lean towards shoving pre. A time where I may not shove is....

Turbo bounty tournament. Hero has AA in the CO sitting with 25BB. UTG+1 has 45BB and has been raising 1 or 2 times every orbit. BB is a pretty active player pre flop who likes to squeeze and is sitting on 22BB. SB has 4BB after just losing a big all in. UTG+1 raises 2.2BB. Hero flats, hoping that the SB shoves his 4.5BB and then either the BB or original raiser shoves to isolate. I know this is a very specific example but wanted to give a picture of where I may decide to flat.

Hope this is helpful.

I hardly ever do flat AA, but there are some scenarios in which I will. Mostly if there's a UTG raise and I'm UTG+1 I will occasionally flat. The reason being is that when 3 betting in that spot it just looks like a huge hand, so I will disguise this by just flatting. Also, if there's an EP raise and it folds around to me in BB, I will flat here as well to disguise my hand as raising in that spot also looks like a nutted hand

Good point I'd do it in the UTG+1 spot you reference there aswell occasionally

AA wants to play against one or two opponents. Flatting in UTG+1 just maximizes the risk that you will face 3+ opponents.

If I'm going to flat AA, it's in SB or BB when there was no preceding caller, or BB with only 1 caller. Maybe BTN if both blinds tend to fold blinds a lot. In any case, only if opening villain tends to bet aggressively post-flop.

The only time I feel you should be flatting AA is during end game. Think avg stack is <50bb... prolly closer to 20-40 bb average. I love flatting during end game bc its a great way to disguise your hand.

I'm never flatting in the early stages of an mtt. Also if it goes raise, flat pre.... I'm probably 3 betting because you normall will get at least one caller.
