I think I would be calling here... He could have had QT, Q7, Ax, or maybe nothing! The way you described his play, there are just too many possibilities, other than a straight. Yeah sometimes you will pay off a straight, but there are so many other possibilities (like 2 pair, cause newbs think 2 pair is the nuts) that I think it allows you to call.

If he has the KJ (I don't believe 89, unless its 8d9d), then you have to just know that it was a sick beat and your time to go busto. Live to fight again another day!

i'm sorry but this isnt 2008...people have a pretty clear understanding of relative hand strength and how it changes based on the texture of the board etc.

sure you occasionally run into a complete noob who over values TPTK, or 2 pair etc....but in general, in 2017, people arent spazzing out with hands that never get called by worse. although we all wish it was still preBF poker, trust me.

Hey everyone, sorry I haven't been active recently I have had a lot going on.

Good to see some discussion about this hand as it still crosses my mind from time to time...

Just to clarify some more info ( that I should have mentioned)... this is NOT a rebuy tournament.. this was a two-flight event. so Day 1A and Day 1B, which every flgiht you have the most chips from you play on Day 2 for the final table. I had only bagged about 14bb from Day 1A).. perhaps this influenced me to lean more towards a fold? I'm not sure.

The motion and speed in which all-in was annoucned was rather fast, it was as though as soon as the Q came out he insta-announced all-in. I am not sure how this plays into hand strength.. I assume its strong? If he had a missed draw would he not have thought about it for a few seconds before announcing all in.

I did say to him during the tanking period, " I dont think you understand how strong my hand is here" but he never flinched. I did ask him to count his bet size (just to see if he was confident) but he didnt say anything and another guy at the table ended up counting it out....

I think akashenk hits the money in a few of his comments.. I understand what alot of you say about having to call 3rd nuts here or being too exploitable.. but given I have never seen this guy before, we have literaly like 20 hands on eachother, I dont think he is good enough to know that we are capable of folding top set..

The 'feeling' I had at the time or 'instinct' was that he just had it and made a really bad shove for value. I am not sure if he even considers my hand strength here. He probably just put me on AK/AQ.

I'm not sure I understand the theory that folding the third nuts makes you exploitable. I guess perhaps if you folded and showed, maybe some people will take that to mean you're playing too tight and that can be exploited. Of course, that is easily counteracted by not playing too tight. Every hand is a different situation. Sometimes I like to show a tight fold to induce bluffing. Sometimes I like to show a really weak call (losing, of course) to prevent bluffing. Its all part of the game.

Anyhow, if you fold and don't show, I don't see any opportunity for exploitation. No one who cares about how many chips they have goes around risking most of their stack and trying to get the third nuts to fold in these stages of tournaments. That's just suicidal.
