Hello,

I'm new here just signed up as I was looking for a decent poker forum website as I'm kind of frustrated in live poker tournaments at my local casino...

I seem to play well at the start of tournaments but after the break I just seem to not get anywhere and am sat playing poker for hours to bust out bleeding chips from blinds or just not hitting after the flop.. I just find the second part of tourneys abit tough at the minute and was hoping for some advice on how to tackle this problem.. I either get dealt really bad cards for most of the second part of the tourney or don't hit after the flop, turn, river I've placed 14th twice out of the last 2 tourneys with a field of around 50 each time.

I need to improve and have been looking on videos but would love some advice on how to maybe adjust my style of play etc...

Thanks

Oli

Wicked variance in these games. Take notes with stack sizes and reads and post here - a lot!

And as soon as you tilt or stop enjoying yourself take a break like a week or two off.

I don't know what format your tournament is in, so I will just treat it like the daily tournaments where I play (winstar). You start with 7k in chips, twenty minut blinds, break every hour.

After the first break, you have played around 30 hands, and the big blind is 200

After the second break, you have played about 60 hands, and bb is 1k

After the third break, 90 hands, bb is 6k.

The tournament usually ends with the big blobs at 10k or 20k. At this point, with about 120 players, the whole chip pool is aroubd 40 bb.

It takes a lot of luck to win one if these tournaments due to the very high time pressure. If you like playing only 20% of your hands or less, you might play less than 25 hands all night, and that number could plummet with a bad run of cards

Thanks for the replies and info much appreciated..

To give people an idea of what tourneys I enter for you all to then give more precise feedback etc..

I buy in for £35 for a 25k stack.. no option for add ons.. fields range from 35-50 each time. I still love playing and only tilt off a bad beat which isn't too often.

I just would like to figure out ways to improve into the later stages of tourneys if anyone could give anymore valuable info

If you're just waiting for good starting hands, and/or only continuing when you hit a flop, you'll struggle. You just cannot rely on run god to win, you need to accumulate chips, esp nearing the bubble. Sounds like you probably need to start opening lighter from late position, and lightish 3 betting wide openers, esp IP. Use a couple of tourneys to experiment. You'll be surprised at the level of aggression you can apply in live tourneys, with little or no adjustment from the table. Abuse the tight players at the table. Identify whose blinds you can take with little fight.

This is a very common problem, I've struggled with it myself. I've come to appreciate, as Kwizatz suggested, that it has a lot to do with not shifting into a more aggressive mode during the mid-late stages.

Thanks for the info! Start getting more aggressive, try take more blinds from obvious tight players.. think this is where I go wrong as I can be a right player and don't risk chips to see flops with hands that are abit about out of range. Will try this tonight as I go to another live tourney in about an hour appreciate all posts thanks keep them coming

start out playing tight and loosen up as the blinds get bigger
