A hand from a $12 full ring tourney at 888, ITM, final two tables.

Blinds: 1000/2000/250
Villain (~40 000) raises from CO to 4600.
Hero (~100 000) on BU with 55 calls.

Flop (13200): 983 rainbow. Check-check.
Turn (13200): 9834 rainbow. CU checks. Hero bets 5000. CU calls.
River (23200): 98342. CU checks. Hero bets 8000. CU jams ~30000

What do you do and why?

IMHO, only mistake in my book was you betting the river... what exactly were you hoping he would fold with? call with? all big cards he folds (if he's sensible), so you dont profit there... if he has an 8, he might do his check/raise... a 9 he probably bets out for value... in either of those cases you lose anyway?

i would check river and hope for some pocket five value to hold up...

My reason for betting the river was that I didn't think he has many hands that beat 55, and I thought he would call sometimes with A-high for that sizing.

When be shoved the river, I couldn't put him on a lot of value hands except A5, which we block, so I made the call. Showed KT.

I would easily have checked on the river.

There is probably very few hands he will call with, that you will beat.
So the only upside be betting is that you might win the hand without a showdown.
However, when you bet, you also give him the chance to raise (whch I think they would do often at this stages in a tourney) - and then you have given yourself a hard desicion to make.

That's some super thin value you're trying to get on the river. You got your one street of value from A-high.

Now having said that this is a really strange river shove and I have no idea what he's repping that chose not to bet at any point - he should have been betting his value hands either on the flop or turn. If he had 44 he might chose to check/raise turn but check/calling and then checking river seems unlikely.

I'd probably call this off because he doesn't rep anything but this river bet is too thin IMO.

55 is a shove or fold pre in that spot. Villain only has 20bb, you shouldn't be flatting with small pairs.

River bet is extremely thin value.
