I play cash for my Bankroll, I can beat up to 10nlz at 8bb/100 so I consider myself relativity sound at poker. I love to play MTTs on the side for fun along with SNGs but struggle to establish any positive ROI, I bust tourney after tourney to rough suckouts usually, and find the fields extremely weak but manage to bust AK to Ax or overpair to underpair in really crucial spots. I Mainly spend my time strudying Cash but have been working on my tourney game, any suggestions on books/threads I should read to improve my tourney game.

I also recently made the transition however no only play tournaments as I find them more fun.
Similarly I was finding fields ridiculously weak amd always seem to get sucked out on at crucial times to some idiot overvaluing A10 or something preflop.

The biggest adjustment I had to make is that I was playing too tight especially in the middle stages. I used to 12 table 6max and play with stat's around 22/16. My stat's are probably the same for toruney I guess but full ring.

The other adjustment u have to make is you have to gamble more. In cash where you rarely get it in pre with nothing less than premiums, tourneys are a different beast. I'd find myself folding thinking I can be good here based on how I would play in cash against those opponents, but in reality I was folding the best hand a lot.

I guess in essence you will lose a lot of tournaments playing well and getting the money in good. Don't be discouraged. Register for the next one.

Another thing to examine is if you're getting short often and having to ger it in to stay alive then having no chips means zero cushion for variance. Try and keep chipping up. obviously sometimes your hand is forced but sometimes it can be due to playing too tight in middle stages leaving you with no wiggle room in the late stages.

You need a completely different mindset to play MTTs, especially when it comes to variance. When you play cash you get used to the mindset of success being smaller, more frequent wins. But in MTTs success comes from much less frequent, bigger wins. So you have to get used to accepting long stretches of bustouts with the goal of eventually running deep and scoring big.

This is a big reason why players who transition from cash to MTTs (and even those who never play cash) get stuck in a pattern of playing more cautiously to accumulate min-cashes. It feels better emotionally and psychologically to win more frequently, even if the wins are small. Until you realize that the min-cashes aren't getting you anywhere in the big picture and you have to shift to a play-for-the-win mindset.
