Advice For a New Player Advice For a New Player

Hello,
A buddy of mine is just starting out in poker, specifically MTT's. He asked me for advice as far as what to read/study/watch. I told him that when I first started out (some 12 years ago) I ate, drank, and breathed the Harrington on Holdem volumes.
Since I've been playing for a while now, I'm kinda out of the loop as far as what is good "starting out" material goes. Are the HOH books still a great place to start in 2017?

Thanks for any advice or help!

Good reading but a bit outdated. What helped me a lot was "the Grinder's manual" - even though it is aimed at cash games, it really helped me to think about ranges, when (not) to c-bet, when to semi-bluff etc.

Thanks a lot for responding Dutch, it's much appreciated. Was hoping to give him advice on just MTT strategies though, I don't want to confuse him with cash game theory and strategy. Might be hard for him to decipher exactly what to take out of that book for tournaments?

Yeah Twitch is good - I'm sure you mean my fellow countryman Lex Veldhuis btw. Watch JCarver, also very instructive.

There are tons of great free videos on YouTube. Search for "poker tournament strategy" and you can spend countless hours consuming material.

Disagree that Tonka is the best streamer. Kevin Martin FTW

Although Tonkaaa is miles ahead of Kmart in skill terms.

Yeah Tonkaaa is fun to watch and he's good. Staples and Martin also go through hands pretty well and there is some good info there. JCarver is also good, hard to rank them for what a beginner should watch as they all have their own way of playing and explaining.

I just bought a good book called "Raiser's Edge", it's all about MTT's and is up to date for the most part.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, it's always much appreciated. I've read (and like) "Raiser's Edge".....but my buddy is light years away from anything like that. He still needs to get tourney basics down 1st. It would be like walking before you've even learned to crawl.

2nd Raise Once as a resource and only $10 a month and you could power through in a month and learn a lot.

I still think Harrington is good to get a basic understanding of beginner concepts. Also, I got a lot out of Moorman's Book of Poker.

I would highly recommend a training site over reading books. But I learn better from seeing and hearing vs. reading.

Twitch can help out alot.
Tonkaaaa is ranked somewhere in the top 100 worldwide by PocketFives, so just hearing him explaining his thought process is good to take with you as both a beginner and at least someone with an understanding of the game
