This has been killing me the last few days. Just a small stakes MTT, but these hands late in a tournament affect anyone a lot and it's been bugging me.
I want to improve, really want to improve!
We are down to 40 runners, I'm almost dead average stack wise.
Edit: I think analysing my thought process is best if people dont mind. Just my thought process for 3 betting was I was in position and able to fold to a shove pre-flop, did my sizing price him into calling? Checking the flop, well there's no draws that can hit and I think I could be way ahead or way behind... then he shoves the turn OOP and I guess I didn't think enough at the time. It could be a scared bet with 88-KK, or is that just logic I can use to be calling station?
I actually don't mind the 3 bet pre, although it may be a tad thin with your remaining stack, but I still like it for various reasons. First, you're IP and second you have a hand that flops well enough and the sizing is ok too.
I haven't looked at the results yet, but I'm assuming that villain had a better ace? Regardless, I think 3 betting is fine, but for sure there is some merit in flatting as well.
Edit: just saw the results. Still a hand well played IMO
Thanks for the replies guys, really did take quite a bit from them.
Can I flip the question around and ask about villains line in this hand? As it's also a spot that can occur quite a bit when faced with a re-raise.
Obviously I'm always raising his AJo in MP3 when 8 handed, but when raised with the options I'd probably do the following in order of preference when faced with a re-raise from the button:

1) Fold
2) Shove
3) Flat
Does that sound right?
No, I would not play it like that. The raise from the BTN is what would likely have me flat as the first option. People like playing games while IP so this 3 bet would not deter me from playing this hand. So for me it would be:
