You're right. It's important to get the default settings right. BUT default settings implies that there is another setting. You can't talk about default settings if there aren't other options.
Does UP really think that they should be making decisions for their players? They decided to change the way the software looked--- different fonts, different card-backs, etc. How did that work out? Was that a good idea? It took two months for us to be able to clearly see which players were in a hand again. They made a decision when they didn't need to--- they could have let their players choose between the new-look and the old, and it wouldn't have been difficult to do.
If UP chooses to develop BOTH options each time, eventually they will have a feature-rich piece of software. Is it really more difficult to have a checkbox selecting "invert mousewheel"?
There is no reason for UP to try to satisfy the majority, when they have the option to satisfy everybody (with very little added work).
If Dax was asking which should be the default setting (which wasn't at all clear), then that is great. Maybe UP is learning from its mistakes-- maybe they will finally give us the other options that are lacking (sound, visual, no pop-ups, etc.). But from Dax's post and UP's short history, it would be a big assumption to make.
