lololl - WOW!!

Guess their earnings report was today? Had not seen the after-hours dump

There was this whole complicated thing with my short-selling of SNAP - it looks like my broker forced a buy-back of part of it, so did wind up losing something like 12% on a portion of it? And then was able to break even on the other part ... although maybe if had just held on, would have wound up turning a profit after all

Was eyeing how high it was just yesterday, and was wondering if maybe it might be a good time to short? But who knows, maybe they might have had something interesting in their earnings today, and the price could have gone the other way?

Oh well - would have made for a fun story if had had better luck with the timing of my SNAP. Short-selling kind of seems like a neat idea - but then it's not so great that the brokers can initiate a buy-back, and there's interest charges for borrowing shares, and there's tax on any gains. Not sure if it's for me?

One thing that seems to be nice to be able to do in life is stuff like puzzles? Because it kind of seems like lots of things in life seems to involve solving puzzles of sorts ... like poker and stock market investing, etc?

One thing that seems to really suck in life is being disorganized? Have been trying to gather all the paperwork and information needed for getting a passport for almost a week now ... and after finding one piece, another winds up going missing, only to be found again, while another goes missing, ahhh goodness ...

Guess a silver lining is that passports only need to be renewed every 10 years - so once everything's in place for this one, won't have to have everything in place again for another 10 years?

Another silver lining is maybe that the passport process has made the drivers licence and plate renewal look like a piece of cake? Have those coming up in October

Oh well - guess will just try to appreciate the stuff that comes more naturally, and not sweat the stuff that doesn't

The struggle was very real with this passport application - but it looks like we did it ... we did it!! Go me!!!

It feels so nice to have all that paperwork out of the way

Headline Watch

Went back to looking at headlines - sometimes there'll be interesting updates on some of the stocks have been watching ... and sometimes there'll be practical tips on stuff to consider when investing, and stuff like that? Although oftentimes there seems to be a lot of day to day stuff that maybe won't wind up having too much of an impact in the long-term?

Today there was an interesting piece on Tesla (TSLA) - it looks like they've invented new solar panels that look more like regular roof tiles?

Old Technology

Tesla's New Invention

Tesla has been making so many innovative breakthroughs, would really like to buy some of their stock at some point. Have shied away from it so far, because the analysts seem to believe it's overpriced right now? Like guess they feel it should only be trading at around something like $242.50?

Instead it's gone up 50% this year!

Oh well - guess if the price is in a bit of a bubble, then maybe the price will come down and there'll be a chance to buy it later on? Hopefully there'll be some profit by then as well?

Little tired tonight - looking forward to turning in early and getting a good night's sleep!

Just won my second tournament ever - haha!!

My play felt kind of bad tho, so guess it was a bit of a mixed bag. And then, the roi's so great for tourneys - but too bad the actual prize isn't so much when the buy-in's so low and the tourney's so small

With tourneys the volume makes it. I mean it is totally cool feeling to have the first place. So congrats!

I think what you are doing really well and smart, is staying in the low buy-ins. That is big deal, because it keeps you relaxed. I mean you can afford 10 cents. and the field is easier.
I had to learn this lesson expensive way.

Oh that's a good point Lapka - guess even little amounts will add up to something, if the volume's there. There's always good points to your posts

Used to be able to play much higher and the tables would be just as soft - but it seems like hardly very many new people are getting into poker, so even at the entry level people will have been playing for several years? So ya, guess it helps to pick a stake so low that it's hard for people to care, and then we all make enough mistakes for it to be soft, and then we all have a chance Also, in the <$1 tourneys sometimes people are drunk/sleeping, etc.

It must be beautiful in Moscow right now - enjoy your trip Lapka!!

Went back to looking at headlines again tonight - so many Donald Trump scandals every day, every day

Was hardly seeing any business stuff, so got bored and started looking at pet pics, eg.

(so cute! )

Then finally found something - guess nobody knows what'll happen in the future for sure ... but this hedge fund manager mentioned a possibility that doesn't seem to get a lot of mention, so that was kind of interesting? He was saying that the market seems like it should be okay for the next couple of years, with Trump's tax cuts - but he believes rising debt levels are troublesome, so maybe the market could just start to go flat for a prolonged period of time rather than drop all at once? Maybe he had retail in mind, with malls not doing so great these days?

Also saw that the National Geographic Travel Photographer contest is back for 2017 - for anyone who's interested in looking at photos that are actually interesting to see

http://travel.nationalgeographic.com...17/all-entries

Guess the neighborhood Canadiana may not be the most exotic vegetation - but it's been lovely to have the warm weather back, and leaves on the trees

May try to finish up the photo lessons by the end of the week - will be going to California at the beginning of next month, so it might be nice to get some tips on how to better take photos of palm trees!

Pet pictures are definitely more interesting than Trump.

I wondered with your pictures, if you tried to make series. Something like 10 different from the same tree, like vary the close-up, angle, position of a tree in a picture.... And then to see at home which one is the most interesting.
Canada has in parts absolutely stunning nature. If you are near it must be similar, where you are.

And you have often really cool food. I am basically every time inspired to repeat, like this sandwich with veg chips.

That's a really neat idea Lapka - that's actually what they did in the photo lessons! The teacher set a bike up in the park, and then took photos standing up, crouching, from the front, back, top, up close and farther away - guess that was to show us how different angles and different backgrounds can tell a very different story, and stuff like that? For some reason though it never occurred to me to actually give that a try myself ... not sure why???

Guess food's always fun to look at - really enjoy looking at yours as well Actually wound up making a pesto last week because of the one you had in your thread a while ago - used it to top a pizza, and it was super tasty! For some reason the photos didn't make it look that way though, so never posted the pic ...

Cooking's fun

приятного вечера Lapka!! (hope google translate didn't change my sentence to something funny )

Will have to enjoy the nice weather before it starts to get humid in a couple of weeks ...

It actually gets hot and humid enough in the southern parts of Canada over the summer to be able to grow hot peppers in the garden, as if it's like Mexico it gets that hot. It gets so hot, people oftentimes start to say they miss the snow

Had some jalapenos turn out really nice last summer - guess will try to get another one and some tomato plants ... then will be able to make fresh salsa in a couple of months

Woahhh - was just looking at NVDA the other day, and it was down 4% for the year ... now look at it, wow!!

Was checking to see what the analysts expect over the next year - and while a couple may be a bit wary, overall it looks like most still think there's room for them to grow?

There's another company, Electronic Arts (EA) that's been doing super well the last 5 years although it was slow to get going in 2017 - and they had a sharp spike after their last earnings report as well.

Do remember you mentioning NVDA very early in this thread SA Nice pick!!

Was trying to watch the photo lessons on one side of my screen, while looking at headlines on the other side - that didn't go so great lol

Guess my eyes settled on whatever seemed the most interesting?

And then there was some stock market stuff too ...

Still not sure short-selling is for me - but guess the decline in retail is a pretty big trend? Haven't taken a look at too many retail stocks - maybe they might be at least worth a look, to see what things are like?

Tomorrow afternoon there's a $5.50 SCOOP tourney that starts at 4:30pm, although it's supposed to be beautiful out - guess that'll be my chance to play a SCOOP in the evening, so hopefully the stack won't be too little towards the end of late registration? That should be fun - looking forward to that!

The $5.50 SCOOP-L was fun while it lasted ... which wasn't long

Got seated next to Nkeyno, who used to be part of Team Online - can't remember what his regular game was ... does he play tournaments or something else? A good player, so that was pretty exciting ...

Didn't register until the very last minute, so only had 12bbs - hope my shove was okay? It seemed like this person was limping every hand ... sample size of 3 hands?

Omaha Hi-Lo's pretty fun - gave it a try after watching Talon Chick on twitch, who made it seem really interesting. Guess while it can be kind of complicated with the split pots and everything, it seems like it can maybe in a way be kind of forgiving to beginners as well, in some way? Like even when not getting it in good, it's maybe not as bad as it can be with NL? And then sometimes there'll be a split pot, so then sometimes there may be a chance to try again in a different spot?

Would have nice if the fun had lasted a little longer, but oh well ... still have the phase tournament on Sunday, so that'll be another chance to participate in SCOOP

What to Expect From the Market Moving Forward, with Talk of a Trump Impeachment??

Really would have expected the market to rise if there was a chance that Donald Trump might get impeached?

Guess is the drop because of something like ...
  • people spend less when they feel anxious, and if there's a potential criminal in charge of the country people may be even more anxious than they were yesterday?
  • will Congress be too tied up to pass tax cuts or infrastructure spending? Or might that still go through?

??

Loss of Market Value

Guess when we buy shares of a company, we're technically buying an itty bitty piece of a company that we believe is worth that amount - because of the value of their assets, and their ability to turn a certain amount of profit in the future? So when the share prices for companies drop across the board all at once, is that either because (1) the market believes that people will either spend less because they're anxious or because Trump's tax cuts don't go through, or (2) people overreacting and selling when the price of the company is really an accurate reflection of the company's worth?

Had looked at those analyst estimates for FB a couple of months ago that showed that their share price should be around $146 by the end of June - and for most of today it was trading around that? So it seemed like maybe the drop could just be a bit of the bubble deflating today?

Guess there's a question of what to expect tomorrow though??

Special Counsel

Not sure, but this sounds bad? Like is there going to be a drip, drip, drip of info for the next 6 months ... so just as people start to turn their focus back to the day to day, everybody's attention gets pulled back and they can't look away?

The Pundit Predictions

The bullet points of the CNBC article were great, and the WSJ predicts that there's a chance the market could fall an additional 5%?

But MarketWatch says bond analysts right now feel like the dip might be temporary?

Likelihood of Trump Impeachment

Some betting odds from Paddy Power

Only kind of glossed over this article - did it say something like that when it seemed like Clinton wouldn't be leaving the White House after all, the market quickly recovered? (Will have to read it more closely tomorrow - my head is feeling a little overloaded )

Conclusion

Wow, so not sure if should sell everything tonight - or would that be too rash? Can always buy stuff back again next week if it seems like things have calmed down by then??

Watching the Market From the Sidelines

Sold everything last night ... and today it looks like the market made back about half of what it lost yesterday, so it went up instead of down ... oh well ...

Had a chance to read more carefully those articles from yesterday - guess they were saying that the market's been rising so far this year in anticipation of Trump's tax cuts passing? So to the extent that the market's been overheated, it might cool down?

But here's some updates from today ...

Reassurances from Congress

The response today from Republicans was that it's business as usual ...

Trump Contacts with Russia

But the dribble of info's already begun ...

More Predictions From People in the Business

More great bullet points from CNBC

Conclusion?

Just a couple of days ago, it was seeming as if the chance of the market going up at a good rate might be greater than the chance of it going down - so then was going to take a chance on staying in the market? But now, does it kind of seem like the chance of the market going up might only be slight - and might there maybe be a decent chance of it going down, possibly by a lot?

Might maybe stay on the sidelines until the the start of Q3 in July - will keep reading headlines to make sure am up to date on the latest info every day, so guess if things change, can always reconsider buying back in earlier if things start looking more reassuring?

If not, guess this is the perfect time to take a break from the market while the weather's so lovely So will just take it easy and enjoy the break

Beginner Corner - Am Not Sure What To Do

Started the long weekend a little early

Doubt About the Choice to Sit Things Out For a Bit

After posting last night that it seemed like it might be a good idea to sit on the sidelines, kept reading more stuff ... and it seemed like with each new piece of info, would start second-guessing myself?

For example, saw something about the German market being set to open higher and noticed that gold futures were trading lower, which made it seem like the market would continue to rise today - and then placed orders to buy back into the market in the morning

Then read that the Japan market which opens before midnight EST started off mixed because everybody was feeling very apprehensive about Comey testifying before Congress next week - and then proceeded to cancel the orders to buy back into the market in the morning, and decided to go back to sitting things out

So am still feeling really unsure about whether to buy back in or sit on the sidelines - guess it sort of feels like the decision is between avoiding a potential downturn at the opportunity cost of making some gains, or taking a chance when the market seems to be much more risky than it was a couple of days ago?

Similarities Between Investing and Poker

When feeling unsure, seem to continue to find it helpful to relate this new experience of investing to what stuff was like with poker Guess when the cards are all going the right way, it can sometimes feel like it's hard to muck things up too badly? But then when the breakeven period hits and the spots get more complicated and there's run-bad and bad beats - guess maybe it can be very helpful (and important) to put more time into studying and looking at learning materials, and break open the Jared Tendler again?

If there were a scale of emotion that went from 0-10, with the unpleasant emotions being at 0 and the pleasant ones being at 10, am probably most comfortable living in a zone of like 4-7 ... like, not so comfortable with uncomfortable stuff? Have a feeling part of me was eager to be out of the market in fair part because stuff suddenly got a lot more awkward and uncertain?

Am probably tilted - because there's not really a way to limit the exposure of a market downturn to one's portfolio besides sitting out ... and then sitting out can have it's drawbacks as well, when the market continues to move up once no longer in it, as it has after selling all of my stuff two days ago. Also, the money's real money now! Guess my portfolio's not super large - but low-mid 5 figures isn't super small either ... and it'll only continue to grow larger, knock on wood So the stakes will just continue to grow - and so guess it'll be important to learn how to deal with the occasional tilt that will inevitably accompany being in the market?

Warren Buffett's Advice

Warren oftentimes says that it's futile to try and sell at the top and buy back at the bottom, so he likes to just stay put and not even try to time the market - because so far things have bounced back eventually?

Have found all his advice so far to be +EV So maybe will just have to become more comfortable with the swings? So maybe that's really the best approach - which is opposite to what am doing now

Conclusion

Guess it can only help to read more - will maybe try looking at specific subjects through Google news, like 'Comey', 'impeachment'? And try to find more opinions from people in the industry like analysts to see how they see things going in the next little while?

Will try to find the optimal line - and hopefully gathering more info will help me feel more certain about with whatever that line is? And then guess will just have to get comfortable with it feeling sort of not as fun, now that the market heater may be over and has hit a patch of turbulence. Guess learning can be enjoyable in a different sort of way

Can get started with the learning tonight - was fiddling around while writing this, and won a satty to the 4:30pm SCOOP, and we can't unregister from the target ... so looks like will be playing, GL me
