Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

i had to upload like 3 years of photos onto this machine and unearthed some pretty painful memories doing so, so that's why that took so long.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

Reminds me of a cat I had for like 17 years.

How old is the cougar? I'm not really that curious about it as far as getting into your personal affairs. I'm just looking to feel some self-pity when you characterize someone who is probably 15 years or more younger than me as old.

THANK YOU!

What is her name? Not cougar's, cat's?

Cats are just great. And any time you get into "I am so bad. I ruin everything", think that if a cat likes you, you just can't be really bad.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

she's like a ninja cat. it doesn't help that she's jet black, leading me to accidentally step on her numerous times while coming home from work (she likes to chase me through the side yard when i come home late at night, but has learned over time that she's basically invisible so she gives me a wider berth).

for the last hour and a half while i've been studying, i hear this irritating scratching noise, like she's clawing at my bed frame. I say "Stella, STOP" and she stops for about 5 minutes. this happens about 15 times until i get fed up and decide to throw her outside because usually if she's doing that **** she wants out anyway and purposely tries to be as annoying as possible so i attend to whatever need she has.

she's not in my room. my door is closed, closet door is closed, but I know 100% i heard scratching. i looked everywhere, under the bed, behind the bed, even in my closed closet. she's not here. i was a little freaked like maybe some rodent got in here or something, but then dismissed it as my chair making weird noises or something.

5 mins later i hear that ****ing sound again. get up, nowhere to be found. I get up a little while later to go pee, come back, open the door of my bedroom and she casually saunters out and goes to get food.

****ing demon cat

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

i have my compilers final at 8 am tomorrow. i've studied about ~7 hours today, feels kind of half assey but 60% of it is review and the new stuff we've done since the midterm isn't really that hard. The old stuff stuck with me and i took really good notes for the last midterm so I'll just review those tomorrow morning around 5 or 6 and prepare my cheat sheet.

there's a chance i could be really blindsided by a problem but this course is curved. I averaged 100% on 5/6 projects which are 40% of the grade. I couldn't finish the last one, it's due tomorrow night. I mean if i really, really really tried I could, but it's more effort than I think i want to expend especially since I need to study for my wednesday final tomorrow after this test.

top 20% get at least an A- so i think if I get a B/high C on this exam I will get at least a B+ in the course. not expecting any more. a C would bum me out.

i don't think my other final is going to be that hard but I also have way less of an idea of what to expect so i should have probably started studying for that today but i'm out of energy.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

wow that was horrible. took the full two hours.

the moment i knew i was in trouble was when i went to grab my test off the top of the stack and thought i grabbed 3 by accident. a full 1/2 of the questions were "wtf i have no idea" and had one impossibly difficult "trace this code" problem, that had a part b) that required you to draw the stack frame after execution and i had no idea. that was a full 20 pt problem that i maybe got 10 points on, lol.

the one problem i thought i did well on was to write assembly code for this massive function, my code was 2 pages long and took me about 45 minutes alone. but that was only a 15 pt question.

then some essay questions worth 15 pts that i guessed on 2 and left a third blank

the rest of the test i think i did alright enough. maybe got a C- or a high D. but even a F on the test puts me in solid C range so i'm not in danger of failing. just sucks because up to this point I had an A before curve. i don't think anyone did well on it, you could hear the groans and sighs in the room and no one finished early.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

reminded me of how I got my first cat. I was 11 and my parents were against any pets. So all I could do is to bring home stray cats feed them and then put them back before my parents came home from work. One of the small stray kittens hid once. I really looked absolutely everywhere. To this day I have no clue, where it did hide himself. I searched everywhere, because I knew that I am in trouble. But then my parents came home. I said nothing. We all went to bed. And in the night this kitten came out and directly into the bed of my parents. Imagine: you are sleeping, you absolutely know that there is no one else in the apartment and then you have a cat in your bed. I am amazed that my parents not only didn't throw out me together with the kitten, they didn't even wake me up and I was allowed to keep this kitten.

sry. I didn't want to clutter your blog. Just this story about Stella's hiding reminded me how I just couldn't find where this kitten was.

You're bringing back memories here, J. I can remember one physics test as an undergrad that I studied pretty hard for. Five questions, one of which I got immediately and the other four were variants of WTF, how does that have anything to do with what we've been studying? I got a 16/100 for a B. Class average was a 14. The guy in the room next to me got a 0, and I of course quipped that his time would have been better spent sleeping. One guy in the class got a 100. He's now on staff at CERN.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

that's a horrible feeling. i'm not used to that. i'm usually the guy getting a 95 or 100.

knowing this class there were probably like 2 or 3 that did. I probably stilled pulled out a B somehow in the course though. my last final was today, it was pretty easy. I think I did ok. I only really needed to get a B on it.

Now I start planning for my Sequoia trip, no idea what I'm doing. We'll be in the mountains for 4 days. I'm most concerned about hygiene, but I should probably be rationing food and stuff.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

thank you. and sorry i didnt respond to your post lapka, i read them and appreciate them.

i think i'm pretty much ready for my trip on monday. I bought a $200 pair of waterproof boots, which I justified because I'll get a ****load of use out of them for work and they should last me 5+ years. I also saved $40 on them by signing up for some coupon deal they were having.

I got a pretty sweet knife for 7 dollars at walmart. We're expecting a lot of rain so I'm bringing my mariner jacket which was really really expensive (it was left at work by someone who quit and later passed away and my work decided I could have it since I was the only one it fit). I think I'll go with long synthetic wool underwear under snow pants and my jackets/boots should keep me dry and warm. I'm more worried about getting hot than I am getting cold, I sweat a lot, this hike is pretty strenuous and the temps only going down to ~30 in the day. Even with rain I just know I'm going to be hot in all my clothes and I know sweating is bad in cold weather.

I have water purification tablets, spare water jug in case mine breaks, a whistle with a compass that i found for 2 bucks, knife, some rope, space blanket for emergency, first aid kit, miscellaneous comfort stuff like tea, mints, vaseline for my feet, cotton balls, pepper spray for bears, a book, a little alcohol and a lot of dehydrated rations that i got for really cheap because they were about to expire. small cooking tin, eating utensil, etc. I have a sleeping bag for moderate cold weather, and figure i can just sleep in my clothes if i were too get too chilly but i dont think it's gonna be an issue.

my pack's only like 20 lbs if that. pretty sweet how much lightweight stuff you can cram in there. i'm really excited. All in all, i'll spend about 400 bucks on this most of which were the boots, so I don't think that's too bad for a 4 day excursion/vacation. I did buy the wii u/zelda game the other day which was $300, so it's been a splurgy week, but I haven't bought anything for myself in a long time and I have more cash than I know what to do with right now so I'll rationalize it that way.

Each morning wear the minimum amount of clothing and the same when you go to sleep. Your body will warm up accordingly. Pay attention to your feet and bring plenty of socks.

Please think of us while you're out there and take lots of pictures! Some of my favorite blogs here - island hermit dude and el Sapo - are great because of the pictures.

boots are totally justified. Good hiking boots are worth every penny from 200$. I do bring a lot of km behind me hiking and I buy every 3~4 years a good pair of hiking boots and always laugh my butt off, when I see people going in the forest with their sneakers.

I've got my 16 year old REI boots on right now. The big fat vibram tread is just about worn smooth.

i was considering just going with him to REI and asking for advice there (he also needs a pack) - nothing wrong with that plan right?
