I'm not familiar with SpiderOak or the security details of self hosting. But like you said, everything can have vulnerabilities and the hosting service is ultimately out of your control. The one thing you can control is encrypting your files with a strong method and a theoretically unbreakable password.
It really isn't that hard to memorize a 20 character string if you use it often enough.
