I'm no expert but what I heard is that since the early 90s we've had professional grade coaches coaching kids from little league onwards and also built a lot of new astro-turf and indoor fields so people could play all year round. Before that football was just a summer sport over here. It was very common for the top club players to play football in the summer then switch to handball in the winter.

Elo,
stop trying to outplay megafish by getting into their heads. All you need to do is play ABC and let them outplay themselves.

idk, good genes?

Look at strongman competitions. Icelanders have been in the top 3 an insane amount given our population:

Iceland also has a really large contingent of chess Grandmasters relative to their population.

Nice graph, boc! Your graph actually made me feel a lot better. Seeing a 40 buyin downer and multiple 20 buyin downers with a 13+ BB/100 winrate helped me realize that my sample size is trash and that such things are normal in PLO.

That being said, I still have a long way to go... I feel like I picked up LO8 pretty fast, but adjusting to big bet games seems to be more difficult for me. In limit games, it is usually "when in doubt, continue". In big bet games, it is "when in doubt, fold". Also, when I tilt in LHE, I open T9o in the CO when I shouldn't which doesn't really matter. When I tilt in PLO, I shove the flop in a spot when I should know I am crushed and light a few hours of winrate on fire.

Elo, not trolling... but I think you would feel way better if you would go for a walk, go to your gym, go shoot some hoops, go to chess club, go hang with your fam, etc. right now. You sound like you need to gtfo of your apartment ASAP and get the juices flowing a bit.

I'm not trolling either, but anything I say will be perceived as I am, so I can't do anything to help. I'm sorry for my former trolling Elo.

Agreed. I know the thought of doing any of that **** sounds repulsive, but once you get out there and ****ing do something you will start feeling a little happier. Imo

Just force yourself to do something. Literally Google some form of chess club, chess tournament, car show, food festival, music event, or any public event that remotely interests you happening within the next week and just go to it. Just go and don't worry about looking awkward or pressuring yourself to talk to someone. Just go and observe and hang out and try to enjoy yourself. Do it.

PLO variance is no joke. The more I play, the higher I keep raising my bankroll standards. 100 BIs for the limit you want to play regularly doesn't seem like a crazy or overly conservative idea. You really need to be able to not flinch at the thought of losing 5 BIs in rapid succession.

I also really feel like while you're learning new games, it's pretty natural to hit some downswings, especially when you're in stages where you're kind of throwing **** at the wall, finding out what sticks. If you're concerning yourself early in your development with stuff like reducing variance, you're doing it wrong. I have to constantly remind myself of that when I'm playing PLO, because it can be pretty tempting to just out-nit the table sometimes.

Elo was expressing some kind of desire to have Pope murdered. He offered up all the assets he has to his name to anyone who would volunteer to do it. Surprisingly, nobody jumped to accept this lucrative offer.
