Sexism: or, Feminism Poisons Everything and A Voice for Men Sexism: or, Feminism Poisons Everything and A Voice for Men

"It's not that the medium is in its adolescence, it's that you're a bunch of ****ing adolescents," she said. "It's even worse because you're technically supposed to be adults." Chaplin traced the paucity of more mature content in games to four basic ideas that frighten men the most: responsibility, introspection, intimacy, and intellectual discovery. She described game developers in terms of neoteny, an idea from developmental biology that describes adults of a species who have juvenile traits. This can be seen in mature Chihuahuas, which resemble infant and fetal wolves. Chaplin closed by challenging the audience, "What do you want to be, a Chihuahua or a wolf?"
thats a really bad analogy, neotony is why humans are so smart compared to chimps and we love a youthful adult as a speicies

So you'd rather be a Joey from Friends than, say, a Danny Ocean?

Once you consider internet Porn, arguing about sexism in video games seems like arguing about an overflowing sink on the Titanic .

that's gotta be the least relevant comparison i've seen in some time
06-07-2013 , 04:03 PM
How so?

Completely relevant imo, and to say otherwise seems strange.

probably because the type of person playing video games isnt the same type of person who would watch internet porn

Um what? Obvious level is obvious.

I think in think in general it would be nice to see more mature themes in video games. Beyond the obvious sexism in games it would be great to see more creative work like bioshock infinite. Writing in games is generally terrible, even industry darlings like bioware have been dropping the ball lately.

last game i have played is witcher 2 and it is a huge step in that direction. as far as gender roles i like how they managed to have clear cut male and female roles in the world but they are both intelligent power and realistic.

I think PJ's original post on the subject was interesting.

Most video games and their stories just feel like something some nerdy lonely kid would write as a fantasy. I never feel strong female presences in games.

Alex from Half Life 2 is probably the GOAT female character to me.

I think opportunities for decent female protagonists are overlooked. For example, I think the upcoming The Last of Us could have been a great opportunity for a real (non-sexualized omg boobs) woman as the lead character.

I'm sure, or at least I hope, you are the one leveling, but wtf does porn have to do with gaming?

It is such an irrelevant ... whatever, I'm not sure I can even call it a comparison, but it'd be like saying, "We don't need to put seat belts in cars because people smoke." It's completely irrelevant.

Wow.

Spoiler alert

Spoiler:
Low Key is right. It's a dumb argument too, "we shouldn't care about sexism in video games right now because internet porn"? wtf? This is the Video Games forum, and like it or not sexism is one of the things holding video games back from being a meaningful art form.

You could maybe elaborate on why you think two completely unrelated things have anything to do with each other in a way that nobody else understands instead of just repeating this over and over.

Surely you guys understand his point. It seems really strange to me that you're all pretending you don't because it doesn't fit with you all trying to feel intellectual while discussing feminism in games.

It is not like saying "screw seat belts because people smoke!" at all. In fact that is completely ridiculous and aside the point while his original point is not. If you want a real comparison it would be someone yelling "Smoking causes pollution!" as they are driving their semi to deliver coal and oil to be burned at a station. Yes smoking does cause pollution and sure you can complain about it, but be realistic about the big picture.

If we solved the sexism problem in games today that would be fantastic but when all of those gamers beat their progirlpoweryeahgogirlskickass!!!! game and decide to celebrate by grabbing some lotion and doing a search for "hot blonde whore getting gangbanged" how big of a dent in sexism do you really think you've made?

No, it's like yelling "smoking causes pollution!" on an internet forum for smokers, which is at least much more topical than the situation you've presented. Can we please stop with the terrible analogies ITT?

It's not about making a dent in sexism. It's about making video games that are intelligent and can make thoughtful commentaries about society the way books and movies can (hence, why internet porn being interjected is WTFBBQ irrelevant). We're really far from that right now, and sexism is a non-inconsequential part of the reason why.
06-07-2013 , 09:04 PM
The analogy is fine.

...

Have you been reading the discussion?
06-07-2013 , 09:09 PM
yes, my post stands
06-07-2013 , 09:11 PM
This sounds an awful lot like the pro-gun arguments that say, "Regulation X won't solve all gun crime, therefore we shouldn't pass any gun laws!"

The point of solving sexism in games is so that women can play video games without feeling like they are an unrepresented minority. It's not a first step on the way to making sure men stop wanking it to Internet porn.

Now you're just trolling.
06-07-2013 , 09:28 PM
No, that's called actually comparing two like things.
06-07-2013 , 09:34 PM
Except that it's not like that. At all. Not even close. Not even remotely close actually.

As I said, you can discuss it to death, but it's a tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny drop in the bucket.

Saying to keep things in perspective and your ridiculous analogy are not the same.

I just spent a few minutes trying to come up with a more ridiculous analogy to troll you back but I could not

There's no market for kids games because slasher movies exist.
