But in recent weeks the overstretched Kurds have struggled to counter the jihadists, who have looted heavy arms and vehicles from captured Syrian and Iraqi army bases.
"They are using tanks, artillery and all kinds of weapons they captured in Iraq and Syria," said Nasser Haj Mansour, a defense official in Syria's Kurdish region, referring to ISIS, which has declared a caliphate in the large areas it controls in both countries, and which now refers to itself simply as the "Islamic State."
The Observatory's chief Rami Abdurrahman said Monday that one of the attacks against ISIS the day earlier was carried out by a female Kurdish fighter who blew herself up, killing 10 jihadists.
The YPK statement identified the suicide attacker as Deilar Kanj Khamis, better known by her military name, Arin Mirkan.
Khamis was a member of a YPK branch known as the Women's Protection Units, or YPG. The force has more than 10,000 female fighters who have played a major role in the battles against ISIS, Haj Mansour said.

These days we hear stories of Boko Haram and ISIS enslaving women, but its also important to get the word out that plenty of Muslims and non Muslims, including men and women, dont buy into the message of ISIS.
I have far to much respect for the warriors fighting ISIS, to buy into the opinion that Muslims hate and fear women, or that Muslims are out to get us, or that Islam is worse then the other religions.
Deilar Kanj Khamis who was said to be a mother of two, died fighting for freedom.

‘Of our martyrs was valiant comrade Arin, she was able to perform a fedai action and kill dozens of ISIS mercenaries and stop their advance, such strong will and determination shown by comrade Arin will be the spirit of resistance in the hearts of all our combatants of the People’s Defence Units and Women’s Defense Units.
‘If necessary, all our fighters will be comrade Arin and shall not allow the mercenaries reach their wishes at whatever cost.’
