Does Whining About Political Correctness in a Racism Debate Correlate to Being a Racist? Does Whining About Political Correctness in a Racism Debate Correlate to Being a Racist?

Or is it often just a case of non-racist butt-hurt? Please link to posts where someone whines about PC in a thread about racism so we can have some case studies for answering this question.

Yes: see cotton hill's body of work

Correlate? Yeah- I'd say there's a high correlation.

Thread needs a pole, with 1 option: 'Hell Yes'.

LGTB though

PC is shifting goal posts. All it is for is for morons to pat themselves on the back about what great people they are.

Please elucidate. What goal posts are being shifted?

How would you know? You haven't had a conversation with any of "them" in your entire life.

AsianNits posts are starting to make me think that Orientals are indeed as smart as Jews.

Actually, you're wrong. Not surprising though.

JohnyCrash, you missed AsianNit's question in post #7.

You also were the first poster ITT to make a PC-move, by insisting on the term 'African American' -vs- 'Black'. So if, as you said "PC is shifting goalposts"... what goalposts were you shifting with your PC-move ??

It was a joke to make a point. Some would prefer black, some African American. The right answer is up to the individual what they prefer.

Nice save, Google. Got the guy out of a jam.

not sure, but i think louis ck, doug stanhope and chris rock all object to "political correctness"

here's a rock example:

i'm in a video posting mood these days.

Last edited by Mat Sklansky; 09-19-2014 at 01:29 AM. Reason: choosing rock was pc on my part, of course. do you blame me?

I have no idea what point/goalpost shift your PC-joke was supposed to make.

You still haven't explained what you mean by "PC is shifting goalposts".

our ex-resident racist silverman was always quick to point out how the meanings of words change, and referenced the south park episode where they changed the meaning of the same word, minus to -got.

But in a similar SP episode, they outlawed the phrase 'n***** guy', and I think that one applies a bit more here. Because yes, the meaning of words can change over time, but it's not usually at the behest of those most guilty of using the word as a slur.

It's the same as when people try to claim that n***** can mean white people too. If you only accept that the word has changed meaning.

But to a lot of people, specifically the ones who have had the slur shouted at them their entire lives, no, the meaning hasn't changed. And a white person telling them it has reeks of insensitivity and most likely racism.

So maybe we should stop trying to recycle words that were spawned out of hatred. We have the ability to come up with new words. Let's be creative and do that!

I am not sure what you are having difficulty with. What I mean is words that were did originate as offensive becoming mainstream PC and off limits.

Like my favorite word ******.

i don't know about that. you and i are pretty aligned on how things should be. we just disagree on what is now and how to get where we want to go.

wasting time on people saying things "wrong" doesn't seem like a good use of time. to me.

it's like that quote from Nymphomaniac: “We elevate those that say right but mean wrong, and mock those that say wrong but mean right.”.
09-19-2014 , 01:40 AM
i'm not entirely convinced that those who say things wrong actually do mean right

particularly when it comes to racial or sexual slurs
09-19-2014 , 01:43 AM
i do understand that perspective for sure. you actually make an old "conservative" argument there. if you can't communicate without using curse words, you have a ****ty vocabulary.
09-19-2014 , 01:45 AM
I admire your ability to always assume the best of people unless proven otherwise, but I tend to only apply that to actual people in my life, not randoms on the internet.

Something about typing words to a screen instead of saying them to a human makes it much easier to be open, for better or for worse.
09-19-2014 , 01:50 AM
I was actually conceding to you. comedians are not the same as random anonymous people chit chatting on the internet. here we have more of an obligation to try and be somewhat sensitive when choosing our words as nobody has bought a ticket to see us or tune us in on the tube.
