Correct. Plus there is also rake return to consider, which mitigates it some.

Yeah, good point. It's definitely not as straightforward as I was thinking. Looking at where the expected prize pool money comes from, the portions are similar from the flatter (36%) and steeper (39%) payouts. So probably how that affects edge depends on the individual player's relative skill.
Also, there is an argument that having a varied number of payout places provides an edge for players that are better at adjusting. So maybe this ends up in the + column.
