The number itself should be enough.
If you are worried about them having that then I get it but keep in mind in today's world of technology if you have provided that anywhere else whether it's a credit card, loan, etc... that information can be obtained by creditors and could even be out there to certain people who want it with all of this hacking going on today.
The most important thing you can do to protect yourself is keeping good passwords that aren't easy to hack, make sure you have no malware/spyware/viruses on your computer, and have as secure of online banking as you can.
With that said I would feel horrible giving them a scanned copy of my SS card too and the number itself should be more then enough.
