just found a picture of somebody using a Diablo 2 mod that allows higher resolutions:
that's 1280x1024, and all that artwork was done 11 years ago
imagine 1920x1080, and imagine if the art was actually drawn today with those resolutions in mind, and if they fully utilized modern chipsets just for lighting and particle effects and if all that power could be focused on anti-aliasing instead of polygons counts
nobody's ever even tried to make a really detailed modern 2d game, i'm convinced it'd look way more detailed and realistic than 3d
and artists would never be forced to stop making something look better because they ran out of polygons, they'd be allowed to just perfect every detail
