it is the fox fire books. there were 15 of them and i have them all. a teacher went through Appalachia and learned by interview all the old ways of living and making things.

definitely the true survivalists set as you can live like a person with the old skills.

great reading and once i started by finding the first volume i had to go get every one. i still read them while squatting.

some or all is free on the net so a great way to get a feel for it. it can make a city person well rounded for sure.

"Insist on yourself; never imitate. Your own gift you can present every moment with the cumulative force of a whole life's cultivation; but of the adopted talent of another, you have only an extemporaneous, half possession. That which each can do best, none but his Maker can teach him. No man yet knows what it is, nor can, till that person has exhibited it."

--Emerson, from "Self-Reliance"

Have some foxfire books, the family had them when we were growing up, they started in the early 1970's I think. They were always great and packed with good information. Still have a few on the bookshelf.

Hard to do better than Emerson. Some Thoreau maybe. Walden is an excellent book. Probably worth a re-read about now.

i dont know but remember seeing someplace where much of it is on the web someplace, as most of the volumes are out of print.

but you can order ones or the set, and many libraries have some of them so its easy to get a clue if you want to get hooked or not.

each book has multiple different things the old timers did and made. like making musical instruments, log cabins, gardening, medicine, tools, their lifestyle and everything else you can think of.

if shtf, teotwawki, or whatever, this is the set of books i would take. a person could start out all over with almost nothing and make it and thrive while having a good life.

I have, or had, the set somewhere. Everything is in there. It'll tell you how to set up a complete moonshine still.

Back in the 90s some of the kids wanted purple martin houses. I though, hey, I know where we can learn to make them out of gourds. Sure enough it was in there.
