Hey Jabonator that's cool you have over 1,000 subscribers on your channel!!! I listened to your original. Keep 'em coming! I'm sure you've got a lot of space to grow into. On first listen I wasn't blown away by the lyrics but at least I noticed them. I rarely do so what can we attribute that to? Probably your Scandinavian voice!

I put up a new track last week myself. it's called Shoegazer.

Thanks guys. I've slowly gathered a decent number of subscribers by posting over 200 piano covers over 5 years, or so.

@hurtchow- The crunchy guitars works really well with the laid back vocals. That's cool and you pulled it off extremely well.

@jabonator- Nice work. Everything fits together nicely. You and I could be twins. Skinny guys with flat top haircuts and glasses! lol

Thanks McCoy!!!!!!!! This thread is a bit of a wasteland but you're good at listening and posting.

I want to try that one song a week challenge I suggested to you but I'm extremely prone to distraction. My thing lately is to work for an hour at a time, and keep notes on all the things I accomplished, as well as what I plan to do in the next hour.

So far I've spent 22 hrs on my next song and I haven't even tracked anything yet. I still haven't finished the lyrics either. For me, the writing and arranging phase takes the longest, rehearsing also tends to take a long time, but recording and mixing I've gotten more proficient at (but still have a lot to learn).

Yeah, there's not much going on here but I still get a few listens from posting. That's good enough for me. I actually like listening to unknown internet artists. There's a ton of awesome stuff out there. Much better and more creative than a lot of the crap you hear on the radio. It's too bad there isn't an easy way to get your music out to the general public. A vast majority of our listens are mostly from other songwriters. That's a fairly small audience in the grand scheme of things.

I don't think I could do a song a week challenge. I'm almost always writing in my head, but it takes me some time to get it the way I want it. I usually have 2 or 3 songs knocking around in my brain, and when I get stuck on one I think about another. Plus, as I'm getting more experience in recording and writing, I'm starting to see where my earlier work is lacking. I'm starting to see the issues as I'm recording, and a lot of the time I have to stop, let it mull around in my head, and then start over.

What I'm working on now is my solo writing and skills. Most of my solos are slow and plodding. I like the way they sound but I want to kick it up a notch every now and then.

Here's a tune from my industrial-rock solo project. It's been a while since I've written something in this vein, and I think it's time I got back to it.

Good stuff CandyKreep. It has a cool Korn feel to it. It's also cool how your avatar seems to match up to the music. It's like its own video!

Thanks man... This was probably done a couple years ago. I used to use Native Instruments' Reaktor for most of my industrial/electronic stuff, but no longer have the program, so I suppose it's time to explore other options.

Candy Kreep - That's some really good mixing and production. Can't believe how good everyone seems to be at mixing. But are all the instruments Vsts?

McCoy - Yeah I hear you. Each song you gotta get at least just a little bit better and that keeps your momentum going. There's a lot to learn and nothing teaches like experience. This new track reminds me of Judas Priest but with the singer from a country band or something! Hey let me know if you do a song with clean tone guitar and keyboards because I keep imagining that coming from you.

I put up another track today. Not sure if I'm going to do any more work on it as I've already begun work on another. I'm aware of a few imperfections which seem more and more obvious as I listen

Thanks Moo... All of the "drums" are audio imports from Reaktor and arranged in Cubase. Guitars and keys are real (Dean Vendetta and Roland JP-8000, respectively) and recorded through an M-Audio Fast Track Pro.

That track, actually, I didn't think was a stellar effort from a mixing standpoint. I think my best (mixing-wise) is this one below. I was pretty happy with the guitar sound compared to the other one. The drums on this one are acoustic samples (DKFH library). Being a drummer primarily I put a lot of effort into this one as far as trying to make them not sound sequenced...

Yeah man that's really good production. Ridiculous actually. The thick distorted guitars and the clean guitars are both sharp and distinct. You must be a wiz with EQ. What do you use for mastering?

I also have a Fast Track Pro. It's pretty good but I kinda want one with more than 2 inputs. Would be helpful for recording drums. I'll have to look into getting the 4 input one soon.

Southern Metal? lol

I started on a non-distorted guitar, piano song a couple of months ago when I was going through a blues influence faze. I was getting pretty bogged down while working on it, so I decided to let it sit. I'm planning on working on it again before too long. My harder rock ideas are all sounding the same so it's time to switch up genres for a while.

I thought your song was good. I didn't notice any mistakes. You probably just hear them because you're closer to the music and know how it's "supposed" to sound in your head.

CandyKreep- Another good one. Lots of energy in that song!

Thanks guys... I wouldn't say I'm necessarily a whiz with EQ, but I did have the good fortune of observing a pretty talented guy on a few occasions. The band that I played drums in for 11 years got to record with a guy who engineered at TransCon in Orlando, and worked on some pretty major bands' records. I pretty much watched him like a hawk when I wasn't tracking.

I use O-Zone for mastering.

Good stuff Jab, I like the progression a lot.

Here's an original I finished today. Not my most stellar recording effort but relatively happy with how the song turned out.

Spoiler:
“Poor Me”

Hopeful absolution
Parallel to one that binds me home
Inconsequential lies
Drip from the mouth of heaven
In and out, I’m allowed to believe it all

Poor me, I’m alive and breathing in the real world
Breathing in and out, eyes are wide awake
Poor me, I forget just how to remember
Immortalized in the moment of a dream

But I know you hear me all of the night
This silence serves to separate
I settle in then tumble out
A little disheartening, but nevermind

The face I’ve always known to be here
The touch of one who remains in a world beyond
Who wouldn’t believe your eyes?
Distant yet familiar
Draped in apathy, drowning in hollow songs

Poor me, I’m alive and breathing in the real world
Breathing in and out, eyes are wide awake
Poor me, I forget just how to remember
Immortalized in the moment of a dream

But I know you hear me all of the night
This silence serves to separate
I settle in then tumble out
A little disheartening, but nevermind

She treats me right - This sounds like Lounging McCoy! What's the difference between this and your other moniker? Some other On The Trolley stuff I heard I think was with acoustic guitars and stuff, right? The lead vocal in this song is madness! I like the arrangement and structure to this track. PS - Thanks for your vote in the soundclick contest last week!

Jabonator - Nice, gloomy song and performance! I liked the dynamics at the end of the song, it was an effective contrast to the hushed beginnings. Vocal reminds me a little of Interpol, and the 80's!

Candy Kreep - Thought the vocal was a bit muddy! Even reading the lyrics it's still a bit unclear what I hear. Surprised by that because I remember you posting some stuff in the past that was mixed amazing. Is this still under production? Or it was a quick project overall? This kinda reminds me of Tori Amos!

Yeah, it was an afternoon project, started it and finished it that day. I did something a little different in tracking the vocals through an effects pedal, instead of adding the delay in post like usual. Didn't turn out as well as I would've liked, but didn't feel like re-tracking it either. Oh well, lesson learned I suppose.
