Another Good guess. And you get extra points for trying to tie to The King, but I believe that The King was abusing Prescription drugs.

And that one really is a bunch of Power Chords (no 3rd).

I should have caught that, but I'm a bass player. Pretty much root root root for me.

In my job, I receive calls from unfamiliar people daily so I can't screen calls very effectively. As I answered, I realized that it was Bass Dude.

He has a strange tendency to ramble on in a stream of consciousness that just meanders from topic to topic without requiring even basic interactions and acknowledgements from his audience. I remember that my grandmother was like that. When talking to her on the phone, my mother would often put the phone on the table, go have a cigarette, and come back 15 minutes later and grandma would still be chatting away. I think I read somewhere that might be hereditary. Wait… I digress…

Bass Dude said that he had a chance to listen to the recording from our session and was surprised that not only did my amp cut through nicely into the mix, but he really dug my playing. It was “melodic - unlike most lead guitarists who can’t find and structure melody” He prattled on about music and gear for a while.

At one point when he was talking about my guitar harem, I said: “Guitars are like guns, I have more than I need, but not all that I want.”

Oops.

This was his invitation to assume that I was some sort of a kindred spirit and he could share his deep (and dark) thoughts with me.

“Oh. I like guns too! I used to have plenty. My favorite was a .44 that I made these custom rounds for.”

At this point he dropped a couple of “N-Bombs”

“And now I can’t own any guns. Thanks to that C*** of an ex-wife.” Apparently he did some time for some stuff she accused him of doing. He was vague on the details.

So, not only is Bass Dude a DB, he is apparently a psychopathic, racist, misogynist, ex-con DB.

I ended the conversation shortly after that. Over the following months I’d get calls and eMails from him. At first I accidentally answered a couple of times. His name is one letter off from a coworker’s name and I’d automatically take the call. But eventually I changed his name in my contacts to “Do not answer this call. Psychopath!!!” and gave him a ring tone of the theme from Dragnet. Dum-da-dum-dump Dum-da-dum-dum-dummmm. And now I just let him drop into Voice Mail

He still leaves these long rambling voice mails sometimes inviting me to jam. He left me one voice mail that was a tirade against Drummer Dude who couldn’t host jamming anymore because he was too “pussy whipped” by his girlfriend. His eMails are even more bizarre. They usually start by insulting some former band mate who stopped playing with him and then eventually get around to stating that if anyone on the distribution list wanted to jam, he was open the next weekend.

I sort of turned into that “passive aggressive” dude that I hate. I just keep hoping he’ll just go away if I don’t respond to him. But this has been going on for about two years now. Every couple of months I’ll get a call or eMail that rages against and insults some random dude that I’ve never met who dared to quit playing with him. The eMails have a distribution of a dozen or so guys.

Well, to be fair, I wasn't trying to have anyone guess correctly, but it sort of turned into a little quiz.

The other clues were:
- Not a I/IV/V Progression
- Elvis was inspired by the title

It is such a 70s Rock cover that it is difficult to give a clue that wouldn't give it away immediately.

How about another musical clue?
- It is a I/VII/IV/I progression.

That may lead to an answer.

Yeah. Sorry. Nice build up for little payoff.

The real-life drama is just as anti-climatic as the narrative. The "inspiration" for me to share this still on-going story was getting yet another eMail from Bass Dude and wondering how I should handle the situation.

I've got this unbalanced individual that has sort of squatted in my life and won't leave. Not that it really bothers me, but I know that if I directly confront the guy, the next eMail will go out bashing me - and then inviting (challenging) everyone to a jam/rehearsal. It really isn't a big deal since I don't know any of the other dudes on his distribution. But this is a very small pool in which we swim. There is likely only a single degree of separation between me and the other dudes. Again, not a huge consideration because I am confident of my own rep and not delusional enough to think that I am good enough to have to worry about trying to make a real name for myself.

I'm not quite paranoid enough to think he is dangerous.

Not quite.

Been expecting that or Free Bird.

Certainly qualifies as a Standard-Cover-Tune-That-Every-Bar-Band-Should-Know* but SHA is V/IV/I and, as you say, not a shuffle.

*Also qualifies as one that I'd be a little afraid of inciting Music Snobbery backlash.

For the sake of 2p2 you have got to build a stronger relationship with this guy. I'm sure he has all kinds of interesting views on various topics.
