Welcome to bear country!

For those who don't know me, I'm a 2nd year film student at The University of Westminster. Naturally, that involves making films and currently I'm working on 'Pandamonium' which tells the story of a grizzly bear expert's vendetta against pandas and the retribution that follows.

Naturally this script calls for plenty of bears. I'm building a full size panda, a full size grizzly bear and hopefully a second grizzly bear head that can be puppeteered.

I wrote it and, since my course doesn't allow writer/directors, I decided that the next best thing would be to be in charge of the bears, gore and effects so until the end of May my life it bears, bears, bears!

Now, we may be students who are working to a budget but I am adamant that these bears are going to turn out bearrific. The script doesn't call for the panda to be entirely realistic however with the grizzly bear (who is called Isabella) I'm going to be attempting to get as close as possible to the real thing so that I may do these noble creatures justice! I have a small amount of experience doing this sort of thing, here's a couple of production stills from a project I shot in January that's currently in postproduction:

Those puppets had to be made much more quickly (especially the fox) and cheaply than the bears will be so I'm hopeful that the bears will be a lot better.

I'm also in charge of all of the blood effects, bear organs and makeup that needs to be done and I'll probably be making an animated title sequence too. If you want to ask me anything about the production, the bears, the effects or me then feel free.

I've made a blog that I'm using to chart my progress in which I'm going into quite a lot of (hopefully entertaining) detail but if you want to know more either specifically about this project or something about filmmaking in general then ask away.

On Friday I dressed up as 'Señor Waffle' to raise money for the film. Well, hey, if you're going to do fundraising you may as well go all out. Some were amused, some were scared, many were confused...
