re: omg omg omg someone just invited me over their band

We had a party once to celebrate my autie's wedding (I was a wee lad at the time) and we had all of our LP's out on a table that unfortunately got hit by direct sunlight for a couple of hours.

Needless to say it warped every one of them!

We had them pressed between to sheets of heavy glass in the sun to try and straighten them out the next day - it didn't work!

re: omg omg omg someone just invited me over their band

ah yeah

most people I know who are into vinyl would stack them on the edge - not too tightly though if they are in a box or whatever you are storing them in

if you ever went to record stores they were stacked like that, but that was mostly for ease of viewing them

Keep all of the inner sleeves on and also the outer covers if you are storing them for long periods of time

You just have to a lot more careful with them.

Did you get the Turntable and have you rocked the joint yet?

re: omg omg omg someone just invited me over their band

can someone plz help me?

I got my record player and I've put it together but I can't get any ****ing sound because I'm a total ****ing retard when it comes to stereo equipment.

I've got an old kenwood receiver and the speaker plugs look like this

and the old speakers I have have like an RCA plug like this

so how do I plug it into the receiver? Lemme guess, cut the RCA plug off and wire them up, right? But which side of the speaker wire goes to which side?

I think you may need a converter as the RCA's are line level , not speaker level.

I have never used one but you may need something called a "Speaker Line Level Converter".

Here is an example of one, but it is only rated to 25w system (it says should not be connected to speaker output that can generate greater than 35w/channel), so you will have to ensure that it handles your output from your receiver.

http://www.amazon.com/XANTECH-SLLC1-.../dp/B000P0UE38

Maybe someone with more experience with one can help you out further?

That's the kinda **** I would try

When Giz's mom was staying with us, she forgot the charger for her phone. We were at a Target, her and I, and I saw a multiple-connector phone charger so I bought it. It had the plug in we needed cuz her phone was kinda older.

I don't remember now who did it, but in our zealousness to open the package, someone, probably me, cut right thru the main cord from the wall plug in.

Fortunately, the plugs each had a little bit of wire behind them due to how it was designed. Did I jury rig the **** out of that mofo? Hells yeah! Worked like a charm, too!

Still, with stereo equipment, I wouldn't recommend such a tactic if you wanted to keep it around and working for a while. Her phone could have easily fried, but as you may know, she was rather cavalier about her imminent passing.

Well, my actual advice would be more like "don't use decades mismatched gear that's incompatible to try to save money, as damaging one piece will probably damage all pieces"

That beginner guitar thread doesn't seem to he very "beginnerish" anymore imo. Half the stuff you all talk about I don't understand either

Everyone is just trying to be helpful though.

It's hard to know what to offer someone when we are all unsure of their level.

James has a great musical background in that he played trumpet for 20 years or something, so that will help a lot in respect to picking up other instruments.

He's not coming in cold.

I don't understand half the stuff in the percussion thread, but it doesn't mean it doesn't interest me or make want to understand it better.

It may be hard due to the nature of the internet and this forum, but if people aren't clear on something it doesn't hurt to ask for clarification. I know all of the information can be daunting.

Sometimes when you are starting out it can be better to just simplify things and focus on something very basic for a long time. Nail that, then move on.

When I first learnt guitar I was perpetually frustrated with my lack of progression. Probably for at least the first six months of my actual "real start" with learning.

Just be patient, don't try too much at once, focus, and ask as many questions as you can/want. There are no stupid questions. Ever.

re: omg omg omg someone just invited me over their band

I got the speakers figured out. Cut them bitches and wired them up, reversed them when they didn't work and now they work. I'm having an issue with my receiver though, it's all cutting out and ****. I'll turn it on and it will work well for a second and then get all dim and spittery and ****, and sometimes it will randomly work well and then go back to ****. From what I've read in an electronics repair book, this would be a PITA to try to fix. The intermittent problems are the hardest to fix as I understand it.

LK for connecting two wires, it's best to do what they call make a mechanical connection, basically wrapping the wires around each other like you were going to connect them and tape it up, but after you connect them solder them. Makes it a lot more permanent.

I ****ing missed the one day of soldering training I was supposed to get at the tech school I went to. Still pissed about that cuz it was probably the only thing worth learning there.

re: omg omg omg someone just invited me over their band

very legend

It's not too difficult. Probably the most important thing to learn is the solder flows towards the heat like it's being pulled by a magnet. You don't want to apply the iron to the solder and try to drop it on the solder pad, you want to heat the pad and the component lead and the solder will flow naturally to it when it is good and ready!
