I'm gonna do a running list I think, a bit like the list in the 'post if you're pregnant' thread, which lists people's favourite movie. You can return and change your mind at any time, and I'll updated the list...nothing's forever, right?

Given Dom said in another thread Blade Runner is his all-time favourite, I'll start the list from that point

List of All Time Favourites
Diebitter - Lawrence of Arabia
Dominic - Blade Runner

Green denotes the latest entries

My favourite film of all time is Lawrence of Arabia: I find it a beautiful film in every conceivable way. Each frame is beautifully composed (when I watch it, I think of the director David Lean as a painter, not a director), the acting is just perfect - especially O'Toole - and the subtlety and depth of the script is magnificent. To me, the script is the best, and that alone is very impressive when you consider the magnificence of the visuals.

I listened to an interview today with Roger Moore who talked about it - he said he went to see it with a friend and when they came out, they looked at each other, and agreed, there's no point making any more movies, they'd just witnessed perfection.

It must be said, it should really be watched on a big screen in proper format, with proper attention paid.

So hard to choose one, but I think I have it. His car is all rattles and shakes; it's horn pretty ineffectual. On his way to a summer resort, he is nearly run off the road by a much nicer car, which then encounters a dog lying down in the street in a sleepy little village in the French countryside. One tap of the horn and the dog gets out of the way. Of course, this sets up the gag. Hulot's car encounters the same dog, and it takes repeated taps of the horn--really the kind of horn you'd find on a bicycle--before the dog moves. But, then, to round off the scene, Hulot reaches out and pats the dog on the head before he continues on his way, his car rattling and sputtering. Simple and sweet, as is the whole movie.

Therefore, I pick M. Hulot's Holiday.

for its time, it was a very cutting edge film. hell, it still is. the special effects were top-notch (you know they're good when you are watching the movie and frequently say things like "how the hell did they do that without cgi?). the cinematography is beautiful, the science behind the film is superb (even today, its still the most scientifically accurate movie about space travel, and it was made before man even spent much time in space).

i love how the first time i watched it, i felt like i was watching a painting. just beautiful image after beautiful image, rarely tainted by dialogue (really, this movie can be just as effective without any dialogue at all, i suspect it was added to please the average movie-goer).

i love that the first time i watched it, i had absolutely no clue what was going on, all i knew was that when it was over, i loved it. then upon repeated viewings the true plot and true themes slowly revealed themselves to me, and i discovered this is not just a movie, it is a philosophy. it is the director's attempt to tell humans what we are doing wrong (among other things). the beauty of this movie is that it can be applied to almost anything (i like to use it to illustrate why and how i think the conservative religious right is holding america back).

i love the acid trip of an ending, and i still am moved to tears by the final scene, even after watching it countless times. there is no movie that can even touch this one.

my favorite movie of all time is 2001: A Space Odyssey

The Godfather is by far my favorite film. I have seen it more than any other movie and am still not sick of it, and don't think that I could ever be. Truly a masterpiece in every way.

I'd like to post something obscure and impress everyone with my sophistication and good taste. But the truth is, the movie I watch the most is Mel Gibson's Braveheart. Normally, I can be a nit when it comes to historical accuracy. But I'm always able to watch Braveheart for what it is. A glorious myth.

The battle scenes are spectacular. And give the feeling, at least, of what it may have been like to be in the middle of one. I also enjoyed the complicated politics involved.

blah, mine is blade runner. But don't put me down for that, I'd like to be original, hehe. Someone already took 2001 eh... I'll go with The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. Unless you want real favorites, then add another blade runner to the list. But my love for blade runner still pales in comparison to dom.

Shawshank Redemption... I love everything about that movie -- the dialogue, narration, soundtrack, cinematography, lack of special effects.

Manhattan

The amazing cinematography and Gershwin score are almost magic.

Casablanca

Nothing else even comes close for me. To me Casablanca is the perfect movie and perfect movie watching experience. Terrific story, great performances, memorable lines, humor, drama, intrigue, romance.

Way back when before DvD or VCRs I taped the movie on a cassette so I could listen to it if the mood ever struck me.

The Breakfast Club is my all time favorite movie. Reservoir Dogs is a close 2nd. I was lucky enough to catch it in a small indy theater well before Pulp Fiction came out.

Stick me down for “Goodfellas” I don’t think I have seen another movie that many times with out getting bored or losing concentration.

One of the finest pieces of political satire ever made. It's subversively funny, stupidly silly, and the commentary it makes on the world were groundbreaking at the time and still remain true today. It's the best time I've ever had watching the lead up to a nuclear winter.

General "Buck" Turgidson: Mr. President, I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed, but I do say no more then ten to twenty million killed, tops. Depending on the breaks.

Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

This is probably mine as well, with The Sting being a close second.

One that I still love despite it being kind of a teen movie is Hackers, brings me back to my golden days

About a Boy: I just love everything about it. Almost every line Hugh Grant speaks makes me laugh, and I love the boy's character as well. It's also lead to lots of play in 'Hey, want to watch a movie together' scenarios, so that's a positive as well. I'm sure that others have chosen 'better' films, but I think it does what it does perfectly which is about the most you can ask.

Narrowly edging
Hoosiers - Which would be #1 without the old person romance plot line which is usually the way I'll watch it. I still get chills when Jimmy utters 'I'll make it' and I still get sad that Ollie doesn't get to play in the final game after getting them there with his clutch granny-shot free throws (but I don't cry about it anymore like I used to as a child).
Babe - Makes me happy, but as I've matured I just like About a Boy more now.

Maybe FYP? I always thought this is what he said. Great flick...clearly one of the greatest comedies of all-time.
