Maybe it makes sense to have this thread. Maybe not and it will be merged to a guitar thread. Only time will tell.

Considering selling loads of music gear to buy a really nice bass, amp, and some effects to play with.

I do have a question actually concerning bass and I still couldn't find any answer.

I have a Yamaha Attitude ltd II Billy Sheehan signature. There are 2 outputs (one for the P style and one for the low end). Ideally, one output goes to one amp and the other output to a second one.

Here is the thing : is there a bass amp head with 2 inputs with an EQ section for each channel so that I can plug both pickups into a single head ?

Although used more for a guitar amp the old Fender Bassman amps have 2 inputs with separate EQ's. I think some of the old Ampegs also have 2 inputs. The problem with using them both is that they will both output to the same cab and will probably end up being a muddy mess.

Fender Bassman is a combo that would not allow me to use the cabs I want. And I don't think it's designed to plug 2 pickups at the same time.

I think I'm gonna contact directly Billy Sheehan. I'm desperatly looking for this.

1950's bassman = combo
late 1960's and 70s' bassman = head / cab piggyback

but you're right not designed for 2 pickups at the same time.

You are probably going to need 2 separate amps to run in stereo.

Right.
I just did a lot more reseearch. there are some heads capable of this like the Eden WT1205 but quite expansive.
I think I'll purchase 2 separate heads and cabs

* Noob Warning *

Can anyone recommend books/dvd/youtube (free or otherwise) material for a complete beginner?
I know there's buckets of stuff out there but I always like to go with something structured.
Haven't really much clue what type of stuff I plan to play but I like blues more than mainstream though its all good.

http://www.studybass.com/ is a very good resource for a beginning bass player. There's a section on blues bass playing too

Hello all, not sure if this is the right thread or not.

I'm wanting to get a cheap bass to learn on. Any tips? I looked at Guitar Center online and it seems their cheapest used bass is $200. Would something like Craigslist be better?

I've been playing electric guitar for about 10 years (suck at it) and I have an amp for that. Will that amp work for my bass or does the bass require a specialized amp?

Never understood the bass or appreciated it until recently. No idea why or when but I got bit with the bass bug. I think it's when I was surfing YT for isolated tracks and found some great isolated bass tracks. I now listen to songs and try to pick out the bass line and follow it.

It sounds lame but I took my electric guitar and tuned down the E string a full step or so and I have been enjoying "playing bass" along that sole string as I play along to songs on iTunes or whatever. A random set of songs will play and I'll just try to add a bassline over it, it's actually pretty fun but I'd like to go ahead and get an actual bass and start using 4 actual strings.

For some background: I'm not in a band or anything but I own electric drums, a keyboard, an acoustic, and electric guitar and I enjoy messing around and occassionally record a song or cover a song. Was able to lay down bass tracks on the keyboard when I needed to.

I went to a GC and bought a few new cheap basses. One was fretless one was not. The fender fretless has wicked buzz, the ibanez fretted also had wicked buzz that was fixed by setting intonation or whatever, but has had all sorts of electronics problems. Currently sitting unused because I can't figure out wtf to do to make it work and I'm more apt to sell it than sink even more money into it.

I believe most people will recommend a bass amp, as guitar amps aren't made to handle that kind of low end. I could be wrong.

Low Key,

Have those 2 basses sent back to the manufactures if you are not happy with them. Ibanez and Fender should replace them both for you assuming that you still have the receipt. No point and having stuff that is not functioning.

Pfft, bought em both years ago at this point. Could possibly track down receipt copies at GC if they go back far enough (i forget how their db works), but i doubt either is under manufacturer's warranty at this point

The truss may be off slightly. It's not hard to tweak but be careful as they do snap - once it does the bass is pretty much done or incredibly expensive to fix. I'd recommend taking it to your local shop and having someone who works on repairs take a look at it and make the necessary adjustments. This tends to happen more frequently with basses than guitars from my experience. Hope this helps!

I've made some bass / guitar purchases from Craigslist over the past few years and haven't had any problems whatsoever, plus the deals I've found have been great. As for some cheap recommendations some pretty standard beginner basses include Squire, Epiphone, and Ibanez. My first one was a Fender Precision model that I found at a local music shop for around $250 at the time (approx. 10 years ago).

As for amps, it is possible to use a guitar amp but generally not recommended as they're not designed to handle the deeper bass tones. Take a look around for a Yorkville 50 bass amp - I still have mine and they shouldn't be going for any more than $100-$150. They're fantastic practice amps for the right price.

Hope this helps!

Look on the back of the head stocks. They probably have serial numbers on them. GC should still have a record of them.

Never hurts to try. Worse case is they say no.
